**The Role**

Reporting to the GM of Engineering, Projects, Masonry & Material Movement, this role leads a team of personnel accountable for ensuring safe, quality, timely and cost effective manufacture and delivery of specialized refractory components for use in the manufacture of steel products.

**Key Deliverables**
- Ensure the development, implementation and observance of an effective Health, Safety & Environmental program that is compliant with applicable statutory legislations and aligned with Algoma Steel’s corporate Health, Safety & Environment Policy.
- Define and execute an annual operating plan that supports the Operations manufacturing plan and ensures that Masonry and Material Movement processes consistently minimize cost, maximize efficiencies and operate reliably within approved tolerances.
- Provide capable leadership to maximize the effectiveness of the department’s human resources by making appropriate hiring decisions, assessing present and potential employee’s effectiveness, providing effective coaching and direction to subordinates to support growth and enhanced effectiveness on future assignments, and undertaking the appropriate disciplinary courses of action.
- Assess and provide recommendations to improve refractory performance, quality and cost. Audit material specifications and supplier’s quality assurance programs. Be proactive with new technology and continuous improvement plans.
- Ensure all maintenance and repairs are completed in a timely and cost effective manner.

**Qualifications**:

- Refractory Technology or Ceramic Engineer degree with 7 - 10 years of managing in an industrial environment, preferably steel industry. A highly experienced refractory expert knowledgeable in Steelmaking refractory & repairs will also be considered.
- Demonstrated commitment to occupational health and safety in an industrial environment and knowledge of applicable legislation.
- Experience in direct supervision of employees in a unionized environment.
