Earth Sciences is the science of the planet Earth. We seek to understand the Earth's internal structure and composition; its dynamic character (earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics); the processes that occur within it; the processes that shape its surface and the materials that constitute its surface layers; the connections between Earth’s surface processes, climate and our environmental sustainability; the origin, occurrence, extraction and conservation of the Earth's natural resources (minerals, fossil fuels, soils, and water); the place of the Earth within the Solar System, and the history of life on Earth.
Western's Department of Earth Sciences is a close-knit and dynamic department combining cutting edge academic and applied research with strong mentorship and teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate level. **Responsibilities**:
The Technical/Research Support 1 will be responsible for:
- Process back-logged X-ray Diffraction (XRD) data and interpreting the mineralogy:
This may include:
- Prince Edward Viaduct
- Engelhardt river bridge
- Various aggregates (Spratt limestone, Charlevoix quartzite, Potsdam Sandstone, Adams Mine Taconite)
- Additional data as needed
- Observe (and aid if necessary) the Bruker D8 Discover XRD repair of electrical systems.
- Collect and interpret new XRD data once the Bruker D8 µXRD instrument is up and running again.
- Qualifications**Education**:
- Community College Diploma OR Undergraduate Degree in a related field
**Experience**:
- 1 year of work experience supporting research in a related technical field
Skills, Abilities & Expertise:
- Familiarity with experimental design and analysis
- Detail-oriented with an ability to function and process information with high levels of accuracy
- Ability to follow processes with high attention to detail
- Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work
- Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs
- Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
- Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
- Ability to collect and analyze data in an objective manner
- Demonstrated ability to understand and resolve issues
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
