**Overview**:
The Aquatics Leader provides leadership to a team of aquatic staff by providing support to a superior in directing the provision of aquatic instructional and recreational programs in multi-purpose Aquatic Centres or at an assigned outdoor pool.

**Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to**:

- Provides leadership in the planning, organization, promotion, and evaluation of aquatic programs.
- Provides direction to, mentors and coaches instructors.
- Oversees the instructional programs for aquatic services, and volunteer coordination.
- Coordinates the planning and delivery of the school swim lesson program.
- Coordinates and implements tools for lesson development.
- Liaises with Aquatic Supervisor and or Lifeguard Instructor 2's as necessary to investigate and resolve issues associated with lesson programs.
- Participates in the planning and delivery of in-service training.
- Communicates with instructors and parents through various means, including phone, in person, and swim lesson newsletter.
- Prepares seasonal summary reports.

**Knowledge, Skills & Abilities**:

- Knowledge of teaching methods and group leadership techniques emphasizing instruction in water safety and aquatic skills.
- Knowledge of the principals and practices involved in implementing, evaluating, organizing and offering instructional and recreational aquatic programs.
- Knowledge of the theory and practice of lifesaving, artificial respiration, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first aid.
- Working knowledge of pool chemistry, water filtration, chlorination, heating and related pool equipment and operating procedures.
- Ability to respond to minor and major first aid and lifesaving situations in aquatic facilities.
- Ability to plan, schedule, assign, train, monitor, and evaluate personnel and others as required.
- Ability to provide input into the selection of new staff or volunteers and performance appraisals as required.
- Ability to coordinate administrative duties associated with the instructional program, including data entry of lesson results into the city's Program Registration System.
- Proven ability to prepare teaching and lesson schedules.
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to deal effectively and courteously with staff, public, user groups and variety of external and internal contacts.
- Ability to deal with stressful situations with professionalism.
- Superior leadership, teamwork, and team-building abilities.
- Ability to prioritize competing demands.
- Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports related to the work.

**Qualifications and Experience**:

- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, supplemented by courses in lifesaving, aquatics instruction and pool operation and maintenance equivalent to a one year program.
- Plus up to 2 years' experience teaching and lifeguarding in a public pool setting OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia
- National Lifeguard Pool Option current within two (2) years
- National Lifeguard Waterpark Option current within two (2) years
- CPR-C/AED current within three (3) years
- Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor current within two (2) years
- Lifesaving Instructor current within two (2) years
- Swimming Instructor Trainer or equivalent.

**Working Conditions**:
Work is performed in an environment with exposure to pool chemicals. Periods of heavy physical lifting and exertion are required, including lifesaving activities. Periods of visual effort and mental concentration are required to scan pool and surrounding areas for safety. May respond to concerned patrons or people in crisis. May encounter a variety of customers and/or challenging situations.
