Office based at University of Manitoba in the Department of Plant Science in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Research conducted at the University of Manitoba’s Ian N. Morisson Research Farm in Carman, Manitoba, and at applied research stations, e.g. Manitoba Crop Diversification Centres.
- Position Description:_

The Agronomist in Residence for special crops will lead the development of an applied research and knowledge translation program focused on advancing corn, flax, and sunflower production in Manitoba. The objective of the applied agronomy research program is to identify best management practices for Manitoba corn, sunflower, and flax farmers. The Agronomist in Residence will develop and disseminate research-based information and increase knowledge transfer between the University of Manitoba and Manitoba’s special crops industry. The position will collaborate with members of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, Manitoba Government oilseed and cereals specialists, Manitoba Crop Diversification Centres, and the Manitoba Crop Alliance. The agronomist will participate in undergraduate and/or graduate student training, in Manitoba Crop Alliance crop committee meetings, and assist in the development of research priorities for corn, sunflower, and flax farmers in Manitoba. The position will develop research protocols, supervise staff involved in field research, conduct statistical analysis, provide annual summary research reports, and transfer the applied research findings to farmers and agronomists. The position will engage in provincial, federal, and other research calls to secure funds to meet the objectives of the program.
- Position Duties:_
- Develop and lead applied agronomy studies related to corn, sunflower, and flax.
- Analyze and report on applied agronomy studies including, as prescribed for project-specific funding agreements, fact sheets, reports or scientific publications.
- Develop proposals in collaboration with MCA staff, University of Manitoba Academics, and other potential cooperators for submission to government and non
- government funding calls.
- Participate in MCA’s annual corn, sunflower, and flax, crop committees.
- Present at extension events and scientific conferences with an emphasis on results of the applied research program.
- Contribute to news and extension articles with an emphasis on the program.
- Collaborate in the development of articles and content for MCA publications.
- Contribute to Department of Plant Science committees related to agronomy
- Contribute knowledge to graduate student committees related to special crops by participation on student committees.
- Supervise undergraduate summer studies working on special crops and agronomy.

This position will report to the Department Head of Plant Science, with advice on the strategic direction of their applied research program provided by a steering committee comprised of representatives from the University of Manitoba Faculty of Agricultural & Food Sciences and Manitoba Crop Alliance.
- Required Skills, Qualifications and Experience:_
- MSc. or PhD. Degree in agronomy or a closely related field. BSc. with considerable experience in field trial agronomy with statistical analysis and extension may be considered.
- Experience with agronomy field research and knowledge translation.
- Capabilities in field plot research design, data management, statistical analysis and report writing.
- Knowledge of Western Canadian dryland crop production.
- Must be a practising Professional Agrologist (P.Ag) or qualified to obtain a P. Ag designation upon hiring.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, working within time and budget constraints.
- Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills directed at diverse audiences.
- Ability to work extended hours where necessary.
- Valid driver’s license
- Preferred Qualifications:_
- Experience in leadership positions.
- Demonstrated experience with corn, sunflower, and flax agronomy.
- Evidence of positive producer and agronomist interactions.
- Experience developing materials for knowledge translation activities.
