**Research Scientist & Laboratory Lead**

Under the direction of the Sr. Innovation Manager, the Research Scientist & Laboratory Lead is responsible for leading activities at the research lab including raw material and selected finished product testing focused omega-3 and performing research and product development using various methods and techniques and guiding the day-to-day workflow of the laboratory. The Research Scientist & Laboratory Lead will be primarily based out of a lab located at Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS.

Key Responsibilities include the following.
- Lead and complete analytical testing on stability samples, product prototypes and raw materials using sound scientific knowledge and following appropriate methods and systems in adherence with Good Manufacturing Practices and Good Laboratory Practices.
- Proficiently perate analytical instrumentation such as GC for FAME analysis
- Develop new process technologies and product formulations and provide guidance on existing product and process improvements.
- Prepare lab scale research batches. Take an active role in pilot scale research batches when required.
- Source and evaluate new ingredients and ingredient suppliers when required and ensure all technical, quality and regulatory requirements are met.
- Develop new product specifications, including material specifications, stability data, and documentation checklist as required.
- Conduct literature-based searches, write internal / external scientific reports, and scientific research papers to be submitted to peer-reviewed journals as required.
- Actively participate in weekly team meetings and in other meetings as applicable.
- Maintain the R&D space including the research laboratory appropriately including supply inventory, organization and cleaning.
- Adhere to and enforce all company health and safety requirements.
- The Laboratory Lead will guide the day-to-day workflow of the laboratory and assign daily work tasks of the laboratory technician, providing oversight for the laboratory work output.
- The laboratory Lead will train all new hires within the laboratory environment.
- The laboratory Lead will ensure all health and safety practices are followed and that inspections and training requirements are kept up do date.
- The laboratory lead will be the primary contact for all testing inquiries within the lab.
- Work in collaboration with and provide support to other departments within Nature’s Way Canada including Sales, Marketing, Operations, Regulatory and Quality.
- May include other duties as assigned from time to time.

**QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE**
- Highly Motivated, analytical, collaborative team player;
- Experience with lipid chemistry and analysis is essential..
- Completion of a degree in lipid Chemistry prefered, degrees in food science, or biology would be considered with mínimum of 3 year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of experience.
- Experience working a laboratory setting.
- Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision.
- Detailed
- oriented, organized, analytical and adept at problem solving a must
- Outstanding communication skills and strong scientific reasoning are required.
- Experience in a pilot lab facility considered an asset.
- Proficient in MS Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Ability to efficiently prioritize work, coupled with strong critical thinking abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including grammar and composition.
