**Position Overview**
The Physician Learning Program (PLP) is an innovative and unique Alberta program that was established in 2009 as a conjoint University of Alberta/Calgary program in order that Alberta physicians can (1) obtain, reflect upon and use individualized practice based information in order to self-assess and improve clinical work through access to clinical data from health services databases (e.g., patient and billing sources) and (2) identify and access learning activities and resources to support learning in areas identified by the practice assessment. The PLP integrates research and evidence-based best practice to support quality improvement projects to improve the care delivered to patients.
The PLP office in Calgary has between 25-35 active projects and a team of 10-15 staff comprised of both internal and external staff (contractors and secured resources from Alberta Health Services).
The PLP is a conjoint initiative with University of Alberta with professional staff working on both Edmonton and Calgary sites. The service hours of the office are Monday - Friday, 7 hours per day, 8:30am - 4:30pm. However, there is a requirement for some early morning, evening, and weekend work and participation at learning events and meetings outside of Calgary (requires occasional travel).
The Manager of PLP reports to the Associate Dean, CME & PD. The Manager is responsible for the strategic management and development of the Office including all core functions (accounting, administration, information technology, infrastructure, security) and activities (project development and delivery).
**Position Description**
**Summary of Key Responsibilities** (job functions include but are not limited to):
Partnerships and Engagement:
- Develops, maintains, and manages relationships with executives and management of key partner organizations. The position is responsible for brokering successful inter-agency collaborations, and leverage relationships to initiate new and advance existing projects to achieve the best possible project outcome to meet the program's performance targets
- Identify new opportunities to strengthen internal and external partnerships
- Leverage relationships to initiate new projects or advance existing projects for the purpose of achieving annual program performance targets
- Collaborate closely with the UofA PLP leadership to negotiate and establish unified provincial program strategic direction, performance targets and measures
- Accountable to the Associate Dean CME & PD
- Lead in fostering new and nurturing existing relationships with executive leaders at data custodians (AH, AHS) and physician groups (Departments, Primary Care Networks, Strategic Clinical Networks, AMA, etc.)
Strategic Planning and Management:
- Development and implementation of vision and strategic plans for the unit. In collaboration with the Associate Dean and Assistant Dean, the manager will develop and annually update the business and strategic plan for the unit. This will require comprehensive information about the current status of the unit including financial, programs and activities as well as opportunities and threats to the unit
- Direct and lead the overall operation of the Physician Learning Program
- Strategically plan and direct activities of the PLP
- Integrate PLP operations into an effective and efficient service provider with the goal of improving existing programs, services and activities
- Make recommendations and provide feedback to the Associate Dean and Assistant Dean
- In collaboration with the PLP Leadership team and University of Alberta PLP Office, establish business unit objectives and performance expectations, ensure alignment of objectives with the university strategic plan, monitor progress and performance, and strategically plan for continuous improvement
- Oversee and work collaboratively to review, assess, identify and make recommendations for improvement in policies, processes and systems impacting PLP's service delivery model; be able to turn problems into solutions and new opportunities
Operations and Financial Management:
- Develop resource plans (staff, space, budget, equipment, etc.) and allocate resources to meet the objectives and evolving needs of students and the University
- Work closely with University of Alberta PLP leadership to develop joint annual business and operational plans while taking into consideration, university, faculty, and stakeholder priorities
- Write and monitor deliverables of Calgary PLP annual strategic and business plan while taking into consideration, university, faculty, and stakeholder priorities
- Prepare supporting documentation for annual plans and reports and identify challenges for the program's performance and evaluation
