Yard Worker

**Purpose**:
The Yard Worker loads and unloads materials and stores them in the proper locations operating a variety of equipment and greets and services customers in our yard.

**Job specific duties**:

- Load and unload materials, from both transport trucks, and company trucks.
- Store material in correct locations in the yard.
- Identify and assist customers with advice, information, and/or help in gathering and loading of orders.
- Ensure that all products leaving the yard have been invoiced and be aware of theft and take action, in line with company policy, to report or discourage it.
- Keep the yard clean and the inventory neat and orderly.
- Be familiar with the locations(s) of all inventory and equipment.
- Be familiar with the safe operation and maintenance of equipment, including forklift, lumber cart, pallet jack, banding machine, panel saw etc.
- Assist customers in handling large or heavy items.
- Resolve customer complaints or refer to Yard Supervisor/Manager.
- Restock lumber bins, sheds, etc. when they are depleted.
- Build customer orders, in the sequence of building practices, to be delivered by company trucks.
- Deliver purchases and/or pick up returned goods.
- Deliver and pack and place drywall and fireplaces, as well as other heavy products.
- Use safe handling techniques to ensure mínimal damage to inventory, customers, vehicles and self.
- Check incoming merchandise against packing slip, identify damaged goods, shortages, and backorders and report to Yard Supervisor/Manager.
- Follow proper procedures according to store policy regarding returns and refunds.
- Make suggestions for policy, and/or standard operation procedure changes when you think that such changes will improve efficiency, morale, profits, sales, etc.
- Help train new employees.
- Work on any special projects assigned by Yard Supervisor/Manager.
- Work in a safe manner in accordance to provincial and federal safety legislation, as well as use of good common sense. Report any potential hazards and unsafe behavior to management in order to have the situation corrected.
- Be alert for sales opportunities and referrals to other areas of the store or other Pro Builder’s stores.

**Must have: (Knowledge, Education, Certifications, Experience)**
- High school diploma
- Must be older than 15 years of age
- Experience using some equipment safely.
- Able to lift heavy materials (up to 50 lbs) to or from the yard, placing them on or removing them from trucks, pallets, etc.
- Able to work outdoors

**Nice to have: (Specialized experience or industry knowledge)**
- 2-3 years lumber & building materials experience
- Construction, Physical labour, warehousing or farming background
- Good driving record

- Fork-lift certificate (valid)
- Other heavy equipment operation (Class 3 or Class 1 with air brake endorsement)
- First aid certificate
- Member of joint health & safety committee
