**Occupational Hygienist**

**What you'll do**
- Develops, implements, sustains and assures occupational hygiene (OH) policies, programs, standards and procedures for
BC Hydro. Develops strategic occupational health and safety plans at the corporate level by: researching, developing and
updating OH policies, programs, standards and procedures, on a wide range of topics, including asbestos, hearing
conservation, confined spaces, chemical hazards (e.g. lead, mercury, SF6), respiratory protection, medical monitoring and
biological hazards (e.g. drinking water and bloodborne pathogens); developing and recommending standards and methods
for eliminating potential or actual hazardous conditions; and by developing plans to address low-high risk/impact OH-related
hazards and regulatory requirements.
- Delivers OH projects and services delivery to support safety and health budgets, schedules, goals and objectives by:
seeking input from clients when developing OH policies, programs, standards and procedures; working with safety
committees and operations staff in the development of rules, regulations, standards and procedures across the
organization; acting as a project manager or champion for OH-related projects and initiatives; and managing contracts with
external service providers and overseeing the work of specialist consultants.
- Interprets WorkSafe BC (WSBC) OH-related requirements, consults with WSBC to obtain clarification, assesses impacts
on the organization and prepares and submits proposals for alternative procedures to the WSBC to meet BC Hydro’s
needs. Works with business groups to support their understanding of requirements and how to meet them. Negotiates
variances to WSBC regulations that are reasonable and acceptable to the Board and do not compromise employee health.
May present testimony before investigative bodies such as the WSBC regarding occupational health matters.
- Delivers or ensures delivery of services to meet BC Hydro’s needs relating to the identification, assessment and control of
chemical, biological and physical hazards in the workplace by: developing tools to assist managers and safety personnel
with monitoring and implementation of OH programs and standards and identifying opportunities for improvement; liaising
with stakeholders such as managers, safety personnel, workers to ensure controls/solutions are practical and effective; and
by providing timely delivery of OH services and products and actively seeking feedback.
- Provides occupational hygiene expertise, training and consultative advice to managers, employees, and safety personnel
by: maximizing opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of OH requirements and issues through activities
between groups; providing program related updates and information to Operations and management; and by coaching,
guiding and mentoring safety personnel in the delivery of OH services and program technical support.
- Maintains an awareness of current developments and trends in the OH field through literature reviews, consultations with
industry peers and industry organizations, and attendance at seminars/conferences. Assesses potential applicability of new
developments in OH to BC Hydro. Acts as a technical leader/expert and resource for corporate-wide and Business Group
projects and initiatives that require OH technical expertise at a senior professional level.
- Conducts analysis of OH-related organizational performance indicators, trends and injury claims and costs and makes
recommendations for improvements. Conducts audits and monitors work sites to ensure that programs and standards
continue to be effective and complies with BC Hydro standards, WSBC and other applicable regulations governing OH.
- Performs professional OH duties relating to the recognition, evaluation correction and control of chemical, biological,
physical hazards in the workplace by: working with or directing Occupational Safety & Health Specialists (OSHSs) in the
investigation of potential hazardous conditions and stresses and in the conduct of field tests evaluating test results to
determine potential for impairment in employee health or violation of regulatory requirements; and by identify
