In the absence of the Soup & Kitchen Supervisor fully fill in the role of preparing and serving meals. Ensure the food preparation areas and dining room are clean and hygienic, all food items are stored safely, and all food handling techniques are followed.

**HOURS**:

- Casual Full Time - 32 hours/week

**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- In the absence of Soup & Kitchen Supervisor fully fill in the role with Meal Program that there is no interruption in services
- Assist Meal Program Supervisor with food preparation (lunch, Mon-Wed & Fri)
- Serve lunch to clients
- Clean/sanitize up serving counters, tables, chairs in the dining hall during and after serving
- Wash dishes after lunch
- Assist in the organization, maintenance and general cleanliness of the Soup & Kitchen area
- Sort food donations
- Arrange for discarding of items that are not usable
- Organize the food on the shelves of fridges; organize freezer; keep attention to produce expiration date
- Break down boxes, take out recycle as needed
- Rotate meat in stand-up freezer as well as walk in fridge
- Assist truck driver with unloading as needed (includes heavy lifting up to 40 lb)
- May assist in maintenance of client files and statistical records
- Direct work of volunteers assisting in Meal Program
- Represent The Salvation Army in a Professional Manner
- By presenting a clean and tidy appearance, including good grooming and the wearing of appropriate clothing
- Demonstrate empathy and concern for clients/families/volunteers
- All contacts with donors, the general public and other employees are to be courteous and professional
- Complete a time sheet each day and hand in to the supervisor at the end of the pay period
- Perform other duties as assigned; ability to multitasking and working flexible hours (special events, etc.)

**QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS**:
**Education/Certifications**:

- Minimum of a high school diploma; successful completion of a recognized certificate in cooking and/or meal prep a strong asset
- Valid Food Safe certificate

**Experience**:

- Less than 2 years recent experience working in an professional kitchen setting preferably serving a marginalized/vulnerable population
- Knowledge and proven ability to carry out basic cooking techniques

**Required Skills/Knowledge**:

- Good organizational skills
- Good communication skills
- Ability to multitask in a very high paced environment

- Exhibit good listening skills, have strong communication skills and respect authority.

- Ability to lift/move regularly up to 40 pounds.
- Must comply with all Salvation Army policies and procedures and associated legislation.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team with supervision in a multi-faceted environment.
- Effective organizational and time management skills - self-motivated and disciplined self-starter.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
