Spatial Analyst

**Location**: CWF's Head Office in Ottawa, ON.
**Reports to**: Senior Spatial Ecologist
Fixed-term for 1-year

**Position Overview**:
The Spatial Analyst will support database management and the development of geospatial models for the Canadian Aquatic Barriers Database (CABD) and freshwater watershed connectivity restoration planning (WCRP). They will lead the development of geospatial modelling frameworks to quantify the connectivity status of watersheds and prioritize barriers (e.g., dams, stream crossings) to target for fish passage restoration. They will also support development of tools to update model results and share the results via dashboards and other web-based platforms. The Analyst will be responsible for shared management of the CABD database infrastructure, including routine maintenance, database updates, and preparing new versions of datasets for release.

**Core Duties**:
Lead technical development of provincial fish passage and freshwater connectivity modelling frameworks (e.g., PEIFishPass) to support WCRP projects, including development of scripts (Python, SQL, R) to quantify and report on watershed connectivity status using hydrographic networks, barrier data, and species habitat data and prioritize barriers for rehabilitation.
Co-manage a PostgreSQL database implemented in a managed instance on a Microsoft Azure virtual machine, including scripts to perform ETL processes, tracking data updates and data sources, and finalizing new versions of the CABD data layers for release.
Support the development of WCRP tools, including API infrastructure, R Shiny dashboards, Quarto books, and custom tools to accept updates to the connectivity models.
Work with team members to implement project processes and workflows to ensure CABD and WCRP data processing and management is thorough, efficient, produces high-quality data, and is sustainable over the long term.
Support the identification, acquisition, compilation, and aggregation of aquatic barrier and fish habitat data from multiple sources and a variety of formats into standardized data structures.
Support other team members with tasks, including managing timelines and providing feedback and troubleshooting support.
Support other Conservation team members, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
Necessary
Requires minimum Bachelor's Degree or post-grad certificate in related fields (Biology, Environmental Science or Studies, Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology).
Minimum one-year experience managing and analyzing large-scale geospatial datasets in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment.
Minimum two-years experience developing and executing scripts or models for data manipulation and spatial analysis in Python, SQL, R, or other programming languages.
Minimum one-year experience managing spatial data and automating processes in PostgreSQL or similar relational database management system.
Experience producing high-quality geospatial data visualizations, including maps and dashboards.
Experience collaborating with team members on shared project deliverables.
Experience contributing to project management activities, including work planning.
Demonstrated expertise working with hydrographic, ecological, topographic, and land use spatial datasets.
Strong English written and oral communication skills.
Additional Assets
Experience managing Microsoft Azure resources.
Experience using front-end development frameworks, including R Shiny, pure Javascript, or Javascript frameworks (e.g., Angular, React, Vue)
Conservation planning or freshwater ecology experience.
Ability to communicate in French.

Full-time at 37.5 hours per week.
