MIT receives referrals from TBPS for people who are not necessarily in need of police services, but who are struggling, falling through gaps in service, experiencing homelessness and who often have little faith or trust in existing service sector system support.
After receiving the referral, MIT engages with the person and follow-up is provided, as needed, for up to 3 months following the referral. Follow-up includes engaging with the person, reaching out to services to ensure linkages are successful, and completing referrals as needed. If a person is an adult 16 years of age or older, is suspected of having a developmental disability, and is willing to engage in Developmental Service Sector, MIT will support them through the referral process with Developmental Services Ontario Northern Region (DSONR), which can open the door to other services and resources within the Adult Developmental Service Sector.
