**Description of Duties**:
Perform the day-to-day activities of a traffic signal repair shop, as established in conjunction with the Lead Hand and Supervisor.

**Duties/Responsibilities**:

- Installs, repairs, maintains, and tests all traffic signal installations, including controllers, remote control communication units, conflict monitors, system adaptor modules, telephone connections, and other traffic related equipment, including video and inductive detection, and wireless radio modems.
- Designs, builds, tests, and repairs complex printed circuitry. Custom designs electronic components and assemblies, including documentation and preparation of schematics.
- Performs in-field critical repairs on all types of traffic signal equipment. Reports back to Lead Hand, Traffic Signals and recommends any needed changes.
- Troubleshoots and repairs data communication link problems related to the Region of Waterloo Computerized Traffic Control System. Assists Traffic Control Management Systems staff in developing system timing plans, phasing, T-2000, PC systems, and data upload/download.
- Builds all interfacing for solid state traffic controllers to operate with a computerized traffic control system.
- Maintains, repairs, upgrades, and tests over 500 solid state traffic controllers and emergency signal pre-emption systems, over 3000 vehicle detection units, and other electronic control devices.
- Ensures that levels of stock are maintained in order to perform the day to day activities of the signal repair shop; advises lead hand or supervisor of additional equipment and material needs. Orders supplies directly from Materials Management and suppliers as necessary.
- Programs signal and phasing plans into Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EPROM), ensuring proper and safe traffic movements.
- Assists Transportation Engineering staff in the design of new and/or modified intersections.
- Installs software and modifies set up configurations. Designs and builds interfacing wiring.
- Programs, tests, and repairs conflict monitor units to ensure proper error detection.
- Carries out underground cable locates to determine the underground cable locations for the purpose of excavations.
- Ensures that all electrical work complies with the most current edition of the Ontario Electrical Code.
- Ensures proper traffic control within work areas per health and safety legislation and Ministry regulations. Ensures on-the-job safety practices for the work crew.
- Backs up Signal Maintainer in those incumbents’ absence or during increases in work volume.
- Backs up the Lead Hand, Traffic Signals in that incumbents’ absence, as assigned.
- Performs traffic control and related duties including work in other divisional units, as assigned.

**Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required**:

- Functional knowledge of the proper operation and use of equipment and tools related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of electric traffic control devices, traffic signal technology, and materials purchasing processes.
- Knowledge and skill is normally acquired through one of the following pathways (combination of education and experience):

- Journeyperson status as Construction and Maintenance Electrician (309A) plus 3 years of related experience as an Electrician with Journeyperson status, plus IMSA Level 3 (includes 5 years of traffic signal maintenance experience); OR
- a 3-year community college diploma as an Electronic Technologist and Journeyperson status as a Construction and Maintenance Electrician (309A), plus 3 years of related experience as an Electrician with Journeyperson status; OR
- a 2-year community college diploma as an Electronic or Electrical Technician and Journeyperson status as a Construction and Maintenance Electrician (309A), plus 4 years of related experience as an Electrician with Journeyperson status.
- Must possess International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I and Level II (Traffic Signals) certification or be able to attain certification within two years.
- Knowledge of and ability to follow corporate standards, policies, and practices, the Regional Field Manual, traffic and parking by-laws, the Ontario Traffic Manual, the Electrical Code, Electrical & Utility Safety Association (E&USA) standards, provincial and federa
