_Reporting directly to the Chief Operations Officer, the Manager of Hospice will work closely with the Nurse Navigator, Volunteer Coordinator, frontline staff and volunteers. Giving oversight to the Operations at Margaret’s Place Hospice, ensuring that the highest quality of care is provided to all and nurturing a home like environment, in keeping with the Mission, Vision & Values of St. Joseph’s Health System, while ensuring compliance the Principles of Palliative Care, compliance with HPCO standards, Home and Community Care Support Services Agreements and other legislative and fiscal responsibilities._

**Principles of Palliative Care**:

- Demonstrates an understanding of the philosophy of Palliative care
- Demonstrates an understanding of caring for a diverse population - culture, race, religion, sexual orientation
- Understands the guiding principles of First Nations, Inuit, Metis and urban Indigenous care team
- Demonstrates ability to describe the meaning of and engage in conversation around the term “life-limiting illness”
- Understands the importance of the family role and appreciates the impact of this role in Hospice care
- Applies the principles of palliative care that affirm life and offers a support system to help individuals live as actively as possible until death
- Understands the importance of a team approach including staff and volunteers

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE**:

- Drives the integration of the Mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph in all aspects of the Hospice operations to ensure dignified resident and family focused care
- Responsible for the overall operational plan and general hospice administration of the Hospice while ensuring strategic and continuous improvement through programs and services
- Responsible for the oversight of recruitment of staff and performance management that will ensure excellent quality in End of Life Care
- Build relationships with staff, volunteers, residents & their families, offering support and setting the culture, philosophy and tone of the hospice
- Develop, maintain, support and encourage annual education on Surge Learning, as well as annual educational plan for hospice staff and volunteers
- Responsible for day to day operational budget and submission of invoices
- Work closely with Nurse Navigator and team to manage admissions and hospice waitlist
- Collaborate on staff coverage for team during absences
- Maintain and update Margaret’s Place fire plan in accordance with regulations, inclusive of drills in collaboration with the maintenance team
- Develop, review and maintain all Policies & Procedures as required with team collaboration
- Respond promptly to concerns of resident and family members, mediating a satisfactory response to concerns and implement action plans to avoid recurrence of similar issues
- Establish and maintain clinical care in a manner that is resident centered and fosters quality care and evidence based best practice
- Ensure that the Bereavement program is maintained
- Provide on-call support to the Hospice team on a regular basis and for crisis
- Other duties as required to meet nursing care needs and operational needs
- **CQI & Risk Management**:_
- Work with Chief Operating Officer & Quality Improvement lead to establish annual goals and objectives
- Establish a CQI plan to monitor, assess and take corrective action as required
- Ensures compliance with relevant legislation and best practices including: Hospice Palliative Care Ontario Standards, Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association best practices, Accreditation Canada Standards, and Regulated health Progressions Act of Ontario
- Identifies and evaluates the risks and potential harm
- **Community Partnerships**:_
- Participate in community committees involving Home and Community Support Services and other community partners
- Support and participate in community events sponsored by St. Joseph’s Villa Foundation as it pertains to Margaret’s Place Hospice
- Work with Foundation to develop communications to ensure community awareness of Hospice programs and any needs that are identified
- **Other Duties**:_
- Be active and hands-on in everyday life of the Hospice, which includes light housekeeping; meals; visiting; care and offering support as needed
- Complies with all infection control protocols, best practices and Occupational Health & Safety policies
- Support staff and volunteers who are experiencing challenges with specific situations and provide with resources as needed
- **Self-Care**:_
- Understands and attends to own emotional responses that result from caring for individuals with palliative care needs, including signs of loss, grief and bereavement
- Demonstrates awareness of the impact of past experiences of suffering, death & dying; ways to manage and cope with the impact of death & dying; awareness of the emotional and spiritual supports available
