Indigenous Arts and Culture Facilitator

Full-time Continuing Position

(Subject to Internal Process)

The Indigenous Arts and Culture Facilitator will provide district leadership in the development and implementation of Indigenous arts and music programs and initiatives across the District (K-12). The goals of the program are to enhance appreciation and understanding among staff and students of the role of art and music in both traditional and contemporary Indigenous contexts, and to promote the exploration and expression of cultural identity among Indigenous students through the arts and music. This is a full-time position for the upcoming 2023/2024 school year.

Role Description and Responsibilities

Support the planning and delivery of the District Drum Program

Collaborate with the Indigenous Education Department team and schools in planning and implementing school-based programs and initiatives that enhance staff and student appreciation of Indigenous Art and Music

Collaborate with the Indigenous Education Department team and schools in planning and implementing school-based programs and initiatives that provide opportunity for Indigenous students to express and explore their cultural identity through art and music (visual art, dance, traditional drum, contemporary music, digital media, theatre and other)

Collaborate with local Nations, Indigenous organizations, schools and District staff to support events and celebrations that incorporate Indigenous art and music

Develop and support appropriate protocols associated with Indigenous art and music programs and initiatives

Reporting Structure

The Indigenous Arts and Culture Facilitator is accountable in the implementation of assigned duties to the Director of Indigenous

Qualifications and Experience

Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous histories and cultures, including the traditional territories of the Lekwungen peoples and other Island Nations

A Bachelor’s degree in Indigenous Studies/Fine Arts fields or a combination of education, training and experience

Experience and/or training in Indigenous traditional art as well as contemporary music, art, or digital media

Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of traditional and community protocols

Ability to build effective working relationships with Indigenous and non-Indigenous community, schools, and district staff

Experience working with Indigenous children and youth in the area of Indigenous art and music

Ability to develop and implement programs

Ability to speak or understand an Indigenous language is an asset
