Addictions Counsellor

The Addictions Counsellor is an integral team member providing support to residents that may be facing homelessness or addiction. They are responsible for encouraging, facilitating, maintaining and enhancing recovery processes with individuals struggling with addiction. The Addictions Counsellor will develop a relationship with residents implementing various recovery modalities including access to community resources done in the context of one-on-one conversations and group sessions.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Provide information about addiction issues and available services and programs and determine which program would most benefit the client.
- Assertively engage clients and build a therapeutic relationship.
- Holistically assess client strengths, needs and challenges, severity of dependence and readiness to change. This includes ensuring staff are assisting client on working towards their established goals and utilizing partnerships and external agencies as needed.
- In collaboration with the client and where possible with their existing support system, develop an Individualized Service Plan (ISP) which will identify client goals, client strengths, available resources and an action plan based on research, clinical experience, and client history.
- Understand their substance of choice, their triggers and what led them to seek substances.
- Explore with client and arrange for the management of acute physical withdrawal both from an immediate as well as longer term perspective.
- Use appropriate strategies and treatments to counsel and educate individuals and family members through all stages of recovery.
- May be required to provide support for court conditions given to a resident including legal reporting.
- Work closely and collaboratively with Mental Health and Addictions Services (SHA) as well as other service providers including COAST, MHSA, Detox and treatment centres.
- Provide medication assistance to residents who use the medication assistance program and coordinate with pharmacies as needed
- Identify unhealthy coping mechanisms in clients and provide education on new & healthy mechanisms in planning for potential crisis to help deter them from falling back on toxic habits and cycling.
- Implement de-escalation techniques and conflict resolution strategies as needed.
- Alert co-workers and coordinate response in emergencies or whenever needing to approach a client to manage behaviours or if needing to de-escalate a situation.
- Make prompt emergency services calls in cases of imminent medical, suicidal or violence risk.
- Provide crisis intervention, as necessary
- Provide input into program evaluation upon request
- Keep clients’ records and information confidential, updated and secure
- Complete required training including but not limited to FOIP, First aid and CPR, Naloxone, NVCI and De-escalation certification and attend meetings
- Maintain professionalism and comply with all employment policies and guidelines outlined in the employment policies and handbook
- Provide medication assistance to residents who use the medication assistance program and coordinate with pharmacies as needed
- Submit maintenance requests as required.

**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS**
- Diploma in Mental Health & Wellness or Addiction Counselling. May consider a degree in an applicable Human Services discipline. Related life/work experience is desired.
- Cultural sensitivity and respect for client individuality and self determination
- A broad knowledge of and experience working with Indigenous communities is an asse
- Knowledge of best practices in treatment of substance use disorders along with knowledge of recovery strategies.
- Knowledge of local and Saskatchewan recovery resources in the substance use field.
- Strong working knowledge of local health, financial, housing and social services agencies and organizations.
- Volunteer management experience considered an asset
- Strong communication skills and ability to work within a collaborative team environment
- Strong administrative and computer skills
- Conflict resolution skills and ability to manage staff performance and crisis situations
- A passion for developing community and being a part of ending homelessness in Saskatoon
- Must be able to drive and meet all TMS requirements to do so
**WORKING CONDITIONS**
- This is a full-time position and requires some amount of flexibility.
- Scheduled and unscheduled on call and call ins are required when necessary to meet the need of the department.
