About The Role
Hi, I'm Shane, and I lead the Patient Booking Web team at Jane. I started out writing software for medical devices and for oceanographers. Over the last decade or so I've led development teams at places like Amazon, Hootsuite, and Coinbase. What I care about most is building software that real people rely on, inside a team where everyone gets to grow.
Patient Booking Web is a newer team with a very public-facing job. We own the places patients go on the web to connect with their clinic: the online booking page, My Account, and the booking experience clinics embed on their own websites. Every time a patient books a physio session, a massage, or a counselling appointment online, they're using something we built. Making that moment simple and welcoming is one of the most direct ways we get to help the helpers.
We're modernizing patient booking and moving it to React one piece at a time, and it stays live the whole way for the clinics and patients who depend on it. We want booking to be truly accessible, to work beautifully on a phone, and to be easy for clinics to embed wherever their patients are. There's a lot of interesting work here, from building fresh React experiences to digging into a long-lived codebase and making it better.
As a Senior Developer, you'll be a core builder on a small, close team. You'll work across the stack, bring your experience to technical conversations, and help teammates grow along the way. If that sounds like your kind of project, I'd love to meet you.
The Impact You Could Have
Help move Online Booking and My Account to React, building new features and migrating existing sections while the experience stays live for clinics and patients.
Work across the stack in React, TypeScript, and Rails, connecting frontend features with the APIs and services behind them.
Champion accessibility in everything you build, so patients using a keyboard or a screen reader can book as easily as anyone else.
Bring a thoughtful voice to technical discussions, contributing to design docs and helping pressure test the team's architecture plans.
Own tricky, long-lived bugs with curiosity and patience, and leave the code a little better each time you touch it.
Help your teammates grow through pairing, thoughtful code reviews, and sharing what you know.
Drive safe releases with feature flags and production monitoring, keeping a close eye on how changes land for patients.
Bring a pragmatic, responsible approach to AI, using it to speed up migration and everyday work while keeping a thoughtful human eye on quality.
The Experience We Feel We Need
Around 5 or more years of building software professionally, with experience working at a senior level.
Solid, hands-on experience with React and TypeScript, since so much of our day-to-day work happens in React.
A balanced full stack background, with comfort working on APIs and backend code alongside frontend features.
Experience working in a long-lived codebase and modernizing it in stages while it stayed live in production.
Familiarity with accessibility best practices such as WCAG 2.1 AA, keyboard behaviour, focus management, and ARIA.
Experience shipping with feature flags, gradual rollouts, and production monitoring.
A collaborative, clear communication style where you share your reasoning, welcome feedback, and raise concerns early and kindly.
Everyday use of AI in your coding workflow, and curiosity about how it can help a team move faster on large changes.
Experience with Ruby on Rails is a nice-to-have that will help you ramp up quickly, and we're happy to support you in learning it on the job.
Bonus points for experience with client-side routing and state management like Redux Toolkit, hands-on screen reader testing, or building embeddable widgets that run on other people's websites.
If you don't meet every single qualification but are excited about this role, we'd still love to hear from you.
