Job Title: Lead Data Center Technician

Job Description

This role leads large-scale cabling installation projects in active data center environments while remaining hands-on with complex fiber and structured cabling work. You will supervise field crews, manage production, and solve technical challenges related to installing, organizing, and maintaining thousands of fiber connections and low-voltage systems. The position combines leadership, planning, and detailed field execution to ensure high-quality, safe, and efficient delivery of data center cabling projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise fiber technicians and installation crews on large-scale data center cabling projects.
  • Assist in setting installation priorities and coordinate daily activities such as cable pulls, routing, splicing, and meeting production targets.
  • Oversee large fiber installations involving thousands of cables and connections within active data centers.
  • Manage the pulling of large bundled fiber cables through cable trays, pathways, and congested infrastructure.
  • Oversee the decoupling and separation of large fiber bundles into smaller, manageable fiber groups.
  • Ensure smaller fiber bundles are properly organized, dressed, routed, and installed into trays, racks, cabinets, and panels.
  • Coordinate fiber termination and splicing activities to meet project specifications and quality standards.
  • Manage challenging cable pulls where large bundles may snag, cross, or become tangled within crowded cable trays, and implement practical solutions.
  • Develop and implement field-based solutions for cable routing, organization, separation, and overall cable management.
  • Interpret and work from cable maps, drawings, routing plans, rack elevations, and fiber schedules to guide installation work.
  • Ensure all cables are properly labeled, routed, protected, and installed according to project requirements and best practices.
  • Coordinate closely with project management, other trades, and site leadership to maintain installation schedules and milestones.
  • Track crew productivity, project progress, manpower needs, and outstanding work to keep stakeholders informed.
  • Ensure quality standards are maintained throughout installation, splicing, testing, and turnover phases.
  • Assist in troubleshooting installation issues and failed fiber connections to restore service and maintain reliability.
  • Maintain a strong focus on site safety, quality, and production throughout all project activities.
  • Perform hands-on low-voltage work including pulling wire, installing data cable, and working with copper and fiber optic systems as needed.
  • Use appropriate hand tools and follow construction practices to support both new construction and refurbishment projects.

Essential Skills

  • 45+ years of experience working in data center environments, preferably on large-scale cabling projects.
  • Experience as a Level 3 or Level 4 technician with progression into a Lead, General Foreman, Site Supervisor, or similar field leadership role.
  • Strong background in fiber splicing, including coordination of splicing, termination, testing, troubleshooting, and turnover.
  • Demonstrated experience managing crews on large-scale structured cabling or fiber projects.
  • Strong understanding of fiber connections, cable routing, cable maps, cable management, and cable decoupling.
  • Proven experience pulling and managing very large fiber bundles through congested cable tray systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of routing individual fiber groups into trays, racks, cabinets, and patch panels.
  • Ability to identify and solve cable-management challenges in the field with practical, scalable solutions.
  • Hands-on experience with low voltage systems, data cabling, copper, and fiber optic installations.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving issues related to fiber connections and cabling installations.
  • Proficiency with reading and interpreting cable maps, drawings, routing plans, rack elevations, and fiber schedules.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to direct and motivate crews in fast-paced environments.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate with project management, site leadership, and other trades.
  • Comfort working with construction practices, hand tools, and data center infrastructure.
