Salary: $22.33 to $30.89 per hour ($40,640.60 to $56,219.80 per annum)

Appointment Dates November 16, 2026 to May 12, 2028

Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • A library technician’s diploma is required.
  • A University education in a related field preferred.
  • An acceptable equivalent of education and experience will be considered.

EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of three years’ experience in a related field (including libraries, publishing, etc.) is required.
  • Experience or interest in copyright law is preferred.
  • Familiarity with issues relating to Canadian universities is preferred.
  • Familiarity with The University of Manitoba or interest in working with a University or other educational institution is preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Effective writing skills are required.
  • Attention to detail is required.
  • Analytical skills are required.
  • Office skills, including efficient time management, strong organizational skills, and strong computer skills (Excel, Word, Internet, Outlook) are required.
  • Ability to apply copyright principles and policies to particular situations and problems is required.
  • Technical abilities are required, including:
    • Proficiency with computers and software used in the office setting.
    • Ability to understand and work with learning management systems, library systems and other technologies relevant to copyright issues.
    • Advanced research skills.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently under time pressures is required.
  • Ability to attend to fine details is required.
  • Interpersonal abilities, including the ability to work effectively in teams and to communicate with a broad spectrum of people in the University community, from faculty to students, and with external clients (publishers, authors, agents, librarians, etc.) are required.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

Key responsibilities

COPYRIGHT COMPLIANCE AUDIT

  • The Assistant will help analyze compliance with statutory obligations and University policies, procedures and rules.
  • Analyze all forms of copying done at the university including the digital uploading of copyrighted material to the learning management systems.
  • Under the direction of the Copyright Strategy Manager, the Assistant will communicate with instructors about compliance issues.

COPYRIGHT CLEARANCE

  • Under the supervision of the Copyright Strategy Manager, the Assistant will review existing licenses and provide clearance services for the use of copyrighted material.This may include searching library catalogues and the web to confirm local holdings and bibliographic information, and obtaining licences or transactional permissions from copyright collectives (such as Copyright Clearance Center), from publishers, or from authors.
  • The Assistant will update databases with clearance details, will communicate results with requestors, and will pay invoices.

COPYRIGHT EDUCTION AND OTHER

  • The Assistant will provide administrative and clerical assistance to the Copyright Strategy Manager, such as assisting with preparing web content, or answering routine directional questions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
