Job Description
The Data Technician 1 supports the construction and commissioning of large-scale data centers by performing a variety of hands-on tasks. In this role, you work closely with experienced data center professionals and gain exposure to structured cabling, fiber optics, networking infrastructure, and overall data center operations. You contribute to the build-out of new facilities and refurbishments while developing valuable skills in a rapidly growing industry. Assist with material movement and organization across the data center construction site. Install and pull low-voltage data cables, including copper and fiber optic cabling, according to project specifications. Use hand tools and construction tools safely to complete installation and general labor tasks. Help set up and maintain site organization, ensuring work areas remain clean, orderly, and safe. Work on ladders, overhead cable trays, and raised floor environments as required for cable installation and splicing. Participate in new construction and refurbishment projects within data centers and related facilities. Collaborate with electricians, laborers, and telecommunications personnel to support overall project timelines. Follow all safety procedures and site protocols, including working in dusty construction environments and air-cooled spaces. Adapt to different shifts and rotation schedules, including FIFO arrangements and varying overtime requirements. Travel with the crew to and from worksites via carpooling or buses as needed. Hands-on experience or familiarity with low-voltage systems and pulling wire for data cabling. Ability to work with copper and fiber optic cables in a construction or data cabling environment. Comfort working in FIFO (fly-in/fly-out) arrangements and adhering to a 3/1 rotation schedule. Willingness to work in dusty, active construction sites and air-cooled environments that can be cold in winter. Reliability and flexibility to work different shifts, including day, evening, and overnight schedules. Additional Skills & Qualifications CSTS certification is an asset. Experience with data center power and cooling systems is preferred. Experience working with racks and cabling in technical or data center environments. Prior data center experience is considered an advantage. Experience in new construction and refurbishment projects is beneficial. Ability to perform repetitive splicing work while maintaining quality and consistency. You join a team that offers structured travel support, including covered hotels and flights, making it easier to work on remote projects. The role provides consistent work over several months with the potential to extend for multiple years, offering stability and long-term development in the data center industry. You benefit from a rotation schedule designed to balance work and time off, with some shifts providing full weekends or partial weekends free. Daily commuting for certain shifts is paid, and a per diem is provided, adding financial support while you are on site. You gain hands-on experience in modern data center construction and operations, working alongside seasoned professionals who can help you grow your technical skills and advance your career. You work primarily on active construction and refurbishment sites for large-scale data centers, in an air-cooled environment that can be cold during winter months and may be dusty due to ongoing construction. Living arrangements are hotel-based or camp-style with the crew, fostering a close-knit team atmosphere while on rotation. Travel to and from worksites is organized via carpooling or buses, and certain shifts involve commuting from one town to another with paid travel time. There are three main shift options: a 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. shift with commuting from PG to Mackenzie (approximately 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. including travel), a 3:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. shift based in Mackenzie, and an 11:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. shift also based in Mackenzie. Overtime varies by shift, and days off differ, with some rotations offering both Saturday and Sunday off and others providing Sunday only. The work involves spending long periods in a single area performing splicing and cabling tasks, using hand tools and working on ladders, overhead cable trays, and raised floors in a construction-focused, industrial setting.
