The ITS team focuses on Solutions Delivery, Technology & Client Services, IT Infrastructure & Cybersecurity, and ITS Projects. About The Role Reporting to the Chief Information Officer and serving as a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Director is the ultimate authority for the development, engineering, stable operation, and defense of Mount Royal University's essential technology infrastructure. This scope encompasses data center operations, comprehensive network services, telecommunication systems, and the University's Security Operations (SecOps) function and architecture. Responsibilities Strategic Leadership and Governance Provide vision and leadership in the development and implementation of the ITS long‑term strategic plan and ensure alignment with Vision 2030 and the Finance and Administration Strategy. Establish and lead the institutional IT risk management framework, managing operational risks and contributing to MRU’s Enterprise Risk Management practice. Develop major technology proposals, enhancements, and business cases in collaboration with clients for governance prioritization. Prepare and present transparent status reports to executive stakeholders outlining project progress, resource utilization, budget performance, and security posture. Infrastructure Operations and Technical Modernization Manage the entire lifecycle—planning, design, development, testing, implementation, operation, and maintenance—of all mission‑critical infrastructure hardware and services. Define and maintain the security architecture for the university's technology stack. Own comprehensive business continuity, disaster recovery, and the Cybersecurity Incident Response Plan, and lead implementation of measures that ensure service delivery, data integrity, and personal privacy protection. Oversee vulnerability scanning, penetration testing coordination, patch management, and security monitoring activities to defend against threats. Financial Stewardship and Vendor Management Develop the unit's annual budgets, monitor revenues and expenditures, and conduct ongoing resource and cost‑benefit analysis in collaboration with the CIO. Lead or participate in contractor selection and contract negotiation for major agreements, ensuring optimal value and service quality. Team Leadership and Development Lead, coach, and mentor a diverse team of IT professionals, managing all aspects of the employment lifecycle—including recruiting, professional development, setting priorities, and performance reviews—to build capacity for Vision 2030. Other Duties as Assigned Qualifications A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience). A degree in Business Administration or Management is highly desirable. Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in the ITS field, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role overseeing technology delivery in a large, complex, mission‑critical enterprise environment. Demonstrated mastery of core infrastructure technologies, enterprise cybersecurity program design and management, incident response, and security operations. Proven experience managing high‑performing technical teams and steering multi‑year, multi-million dollar capital projects from initiation through completion. Leadership experience managing annual budgets and overseeing high-value vendor contracts. Deep understanding of current and emerging networking, cloud computing, data center, security architecture, cyber defense, and compliance frameworks (e.g., ISO 27001, NIST). Proficiency in project management, business analysis, and enterprise architecture methodologies. Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to translate complex technical issues into clear business terms for executive consumption. Advanced negotiation skills and strong stakeholder management capabilities. Relevant certifications in infrastructure (e.g., Cloud, Network) and cybersecurity (e.g., CISSP, CISM, CISA) are assets.
