Information about the natural area can be found at www.wagnerfen.ca .Job Description and EligibilityThe Environmental Project Specialist will learn public education, citizen science and conservation management skills. As a charitable, non-profit sector environmental organization, Wagner Natural Area Society (WNAS) provides this opportunity. We try to give a meaningful job experience for youth (15 – 30), students returning to academic programs after summer, preferably in science or environmental studies. We want to put your skills and education to work, foster a sense of teamwork, enable you to be responsible for your own efforts, and to expand your knowledge of career skills.Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe student will: undertake an environmental project designed to enhance documentation of flora and fauna being conserved on Wagner Natural Area.Take responsibility for an ongoing wildlife trail cameras initiative.Help develop expanded educational materials related to Wagner Fen.Help with monitoring and maintaining our public trails, amenities, and perimeter fence.Assist with a management strategy for invasive weeds, based on established protocols.Participate in outreach presentations, staff display booths, and lead field trips along with WNAS volunteers.Contribute brief articles for inclusion on the WNAS website, including a monthly newsletter.Participate in the inventory of flora and fauna.Undertake some review of archival documents.Complete a final report of observations made and work conducted throughout the summer.Please submit your application (resume and cover letter) by March 2nd through email directly to:Dave Ealey, President, Wagner Natural Area SocietyPh: 780-974-3749Interviews for candidates are planned for the week of March 9th.RequirementsEnthusiasm for the environment and the out-of-doorsAn ability to work independentlyA willingness to engage with a variety of audiencesA vehicle to drive to the natural areaFamiliarity with trail cameras and wildlife identification would be assetsSome familiarity with hand tools for brush and tree clearing would be an assetHours of Work and Salary35 hours of work per week; $17.00 per hour. Office work will occur from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Field work at Wagner Natural Area may begin earlier or extend into the evening, depending upon the species being studied. The schedule will also be influenced by suitable weather and site conditions. At least one day each weekend will be worked as this is when the public most often visit the site. Occasional evening meetings may be required.
