Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Job Summary The Information Systems team supports and maintains all of Canonical’s IT production services, running systems used by over 60 million Ubuntu users. As a Site Reliability / GitOps engineer you will advance operations automation across our private clouds and public cloud partners, leveraging open‑source infrastructure‑as‑code tools, CI/CD pipelines and Canonical’s leading automation products. You will also contribute to Canonical and open‑source product improvements through bug work, pull requests and cross‑team collaboration. Location This role is available remotely and accepts candidates from any timezone. Responsibilities Develop and enhance infrastructure‑as‑code practices, continuously increasing automation across Canonical’s environments. Automate software operations to achieve reuse and consistency across private and public clouds, addressing distributed system complexities. Create new features that improve the resilience and scalability of Canonical’s cloud and container portfolio. Maintain operational responsibility for core services, networks and infrastructure. Build and maintain observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana and Elasticsearch; design, implement and update monitoring and alerting. Collaborate with development teams to design service architecture, documentation, playbooks, policies and operational procedures. Provide assistance to globally distributed engineering, operations and support peers. Allocate dedicated time for large‑scale projects and automation of manual tasks. Share expertise, best practices and mentorship during design sessions. Take final responsibility for time‑critical escalations. Qualifications Deep experience defining operations in code with version control, peer review and CI/CD for applications and infrastructure. Strong modern engineering background, including unit testing, SCM, CI/CD and Agile practices. Python development experience in large projects. Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, firewalls and storage systems such as Ceph and databases. Hands‑on administration of enterprise Linux servers. Extensive knowledge of cloud computing concepts and technologies. Bachelor’s degree or greater in computer science or a related engineering field. Excellent communication skills in English (email, chat, video or voice). Motivation to troubleshoot from kernel to web and a willingness to seek help when needed. Adaptability and a quick learning mindset. Passion for fast‑changing environments and open source, especially Ubuntu or Debian.
