**Please note that to be considered for any position at our Client, all candidates must be eligible to meet the requirements of the Canadian Controlled-Goods Program of the Defense Production Act, and be able to hold and maintain a Canadian Security Clearance. If you are not clear about your eligibility, please consult the Government of Canada website HERE**

An FPGA Designer role at our Client is not your ordinary stay-in-your-lane type of career. Instead, its an advanced, multi-disciplinary role that is essential to all aspects of architecture, design, verification, debug and test and deployment of high-performance, gyro-stabilized airborne optical systems. Its where concept turns into reality, where getting it right is a whole-team effort, and where your expertise matters.

Our philosophy is firmly rooted in modularity and component-based design because its just the smart thing to do. Finally, this role not only encourages you, but it pushes you to experiment and try new things. We want you to be vocal and involved in improving our efficiency, agility and ingeniousness of our FPGA designs. We encourage you to contribute to our knowledge bases, standards and workflows in other words truly be a part of our team.

Their work-life philosophy is also unique they've fully embraced a 4-day work week, all year long and wrapped up in a hybrid model that allows you to work from where it makes the most sense.

Reporting to the Vice President of NPI, indirectly to a Project / Program Management Lead and working alongside a small but impressive team, you will share in the responsibility and accountability for all aspects of using VHDL to create high quality, re-useable designs for FPGA and programmable logic devices as part of the design, verification, manufacturing, and testing of embedded systems.

You will work alongside multi-disciplinary teams in requirements generation, architecture, design and validation all aspects of electronics, interconnect, signal integrity, FPGA and programmable logic development and embedded software.

Specific Responsibilities Include:
  • Architecture, design, implementation and verification of advanced FPGA designs using VHDL.
  • Design and implementation of complex algorithms for video processing and transmission as well as memory systems to support microprocessors and system-on-a-chip devices.
  • Realization of complex algorithms into digital form required for real-time FPGA implementation.
  • Design and implementation using Signal Integrity best practices for digital systems.
  • Create and review design simulations using ModelSim.
  • Implement unit tests for automated FPGA design verification.
  • Develop utility and automation scripts with Python.
Technical Skills You'll Need for Success
  • Obviously a deep understanding of FPGA designs and VHDL with a solid and mature component-oriented and high re-use approach to VHDL design using current standards.
  • Knowledge of how a piece of HDL code will look like as a circuit
  • Advanced knowledge of the design, analysis, implementation and verification of complex multi-layer FPGA and Microprocessor circuit cards.
  • Experience with GPU architecture and CUDA programming
High-Value Technical Skills
  • Working knowledge of Cadence OrCad and Allegro CAD tools an asset.
  • Experience with design for aircraft safety requirements and standards is an asset.
  • Experience with Matlab programming
About You as an FPGA Designer

Our Clients success is not only derived from the collective technical capabilities of their team, but more importantly HOW they work together. Here's what we value, and we seek those share the following:

  • Creativity, Curiosity and Problem Solving, with healthy obsession for attention to detail. You may have recently read some mind-bogglingly complex vendor user guides, spent a week at some point in the past clicking on everything in the FPGA editor / device viewer or spent even more time doing interesting things with tcl.
  • For you, problems should appear as something to which solutions can be readily developed and their cost estimated.
  • You know how a piece of HDL code will look like as a circuit
  • Not afraid to seek out responsibility and opportunities to take the lead.
  • A confident technical communicator who can articulate ideas and concepts, but who also knows that confidence in communication also means the ability to ask for help or collaboration when you need it.
  • A continuous-improvement approach to design, processes and practices
  • Participating in requirements generation, design and code reviews as opposed to a spectator.
  • Providing realistic cost and schedule/work estimations of assigned work packages
  • Constructively provide and receive guidance and mentoring to other members of the engineering team as were all in this together.
  • Preference for working on small teams that actually communicate with each other.
  • The kind of professional maturity that enables you to manage your own time and priorities and finds motivation from multiple sources.
Qualifications
  • Due to the nature of our work, you must be eligible to meet the requirements of the Controlled Goods Program requirements of the Government of Canada, and be able to hold and maintain a Canadian Security Clearance.
  • A degree or technical diploma from an accredited post-secondary institution, specializing in Software Engineering/Computer Science, Electrical Engineering
