Joining Arup – Arup’s purpose, shared values, and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world. The Bridge, Civil Structural and Offshore Structures (BCOS) team undertakes exciting and challenging engineering mandates for major bridge and transit projects throughout Canada. Projects include the Technical Advisor role to Metrolinx for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, the GO Rail Expansion—On Corridor Works (OnCorr), the design of the Keating Channel footbridge for Waterfront Toronto, the Technical Advisor role to Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) for the replacement of the iconic Alexandra Bridge in Ottawa, and the Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility (MTMD) for the replacement of the 2 km Ile d’Orléans Bridge with a 430 m cable‑stay span near Quebec City. The BCOS Engineer will work from our Toronto office in a hybrid environment and contribute to all project phases—planning, design, procurement, and construction—of transportation structures such as railway, highway, and pedestrian bridges. Responsibilities Assist in concept, preliminary, and detailed design of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and other civil structures. Perform calculations and prepare design documentation under the guidance of senior engineers; review the work of EITs as appropriate. Support quality control activities by participating in independent reviews and checks of structural designs. Collaborate with CAD and BIM staff to support drawing production and provide necessary design information. Contribute to the preparation of construction specifications and tender documentation as part of a project team. Assist in managing smaller project tasks or work packages to help ensure delivery on schedule, within budget, and to quality standards. Participate in meetings with clients to present work, discuss design issues, and support project coordination efforts under the direction of senior staff. Support the proposal preparation process for bridge design projects as required. Is this role right for you? Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Civil/Structural Engineering. Licensed as a Professional Engineer in Ontario (P. Eng.). 5 years or more of experience with prior work experience in infrastructure/bridge projects, preferably in Ontario. Thorough understanding and design experience using applicable codes and standards, notably CSA S6, AREMA and Metrolinx Guidelines. Experience with the analysis and design of new bridges and civil structures, and rehabilitation of existing structures. Ability to prepare comprehensive engineering reports, condition assessment reports, design reports, presentations, technical proposals and specifications. Ability to communicate successfully (verbally, written, and in executive presentations) with internal and external clients and collaborators, and well‑developed teams and positive relationships. Proficiency with structural design and analysis software with bridge engineering applications; working experience with MIDAS or other similar software. Experience in parametric modelling using Rhino and Grasshopper would be an asset.
