OverviewJob Description Summary The Technical Field Advisor (Electrical and Balance of Plant) is the on-site technical specialist supporting the installation and commissioning of hydroelectric power projects. This role ensures that the electrical works are executed in accordance with the design, technical standards, quality requirements, and health and safety regulations. The Technical Field Advisor is responsible for preparing, directing and controlling the different phases of field operations for a project, ensuring site works are completed safely, at the required quality standards, on time and within budget. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in construction site management, strong leadership skills, and the ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently.ResponsibilitiesEnsure EHS compliance, evaluate tasks to assess hazards posing risks to workers, confirm controls are in place to prevent injuries and unplanned events. Stop work if risks are not sufficiently mitigatedPromote and uphold a strong safety culture; ensure all technical work complies with EHS requirementsParticipate in risk assessments, method statements, and job safety analyses for high-risk activities (lifts, hot work, working at heights, energized work, electrical testing)Support implementation of environmental protection measuresEnsure compliance with applicable standards, permits, and regulatory obligations during construction and commissioningWork closely with the Site Manager to plan and sequence construction activitiesProvide input to construction schedules for technical tasks and critical path activitiesProvide day-to-day technical guidance and expertise to on-site construction teamsLead and direct various labour teams in the planning and execution of daily activitiesClosely monitor critical installation processesReview and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, procedures, and manualsVerify that construction and installation work complies with design, codes, standards, and OEM requirementsParticipate in inspections and critical quality checksSupport resolution of technical non-conformances and punch list itemsSupport constructability reviews and propose solutions to technical and logistical constraintsCoordinate with specialized subcontractors for key installation tasksReview and validate test resultsSupport preparation of as-built documentation and O&M handover packagesProvide regular updates to project leadership on technical issues, risks, and progressAct as site technical point of contact for design engineers, project managers, methods engineers, subcontractors and customer representativesParticipate in technical meetings, design clarifications, and change management discussionsLead or contribute to root cause analysis for construction issuesRecommend technical solutions, field changes and design optimizations where appropriateCapture lessons learned and improvement opportunities for future projects and standard practicesQualificationsBachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related technical disciplineEquivalent technical diploma with substantial hydro or power plant construction experience may be consideredMinimum of 5 years of prior hydro electric generator experience, preferably in a supervisor capacityStrong technical knowledge of hydroelectric plant systems and structuresMinimum of 5 years in electrical installation in turbines or generatorsExcellent computer skills and MS Office knowledgeSkillsActively respect all safety instructions detailed in the site EHS plan and be proactive on all safety related topics at the work siteReport any quality issues and non-conformities and ensure the site quality plan is respected at every step of the workAbility to lead, motivate and empower staffPerform skilled duties involving electrical testingRead and understand manuals, drawings, plans and specificationsCommunicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writingEstablish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of workWork under pressureStrong problem-solving and decision-making skills in a field environmentGood communication and interpersonal skills for working with multi-disciplinary teams and contractorsAdditional InformationFor candidates applying to a Canadian-based position, the pay range for this position is between $92,800 and $139,200 CAD.
