Head of Permitting

The Head of Permitting will lead environmental compliance at Divert’s growing number of facilities and the permitting efforts as we build new facilities across the country. You will provide in-house environment and regulatory direction, support, and guidance to the construction, engineering, and operations network. You will navigate and execute the permitting process for complicated greenfield projects to ensure sites follow applicable environmental regulations, and liaise with corporate health and safety policies as well.

As a member of the Engineering and Construction Leadership Team, and reporting to the VP of Engineering and Construction, you will lead all aspects of the development and implementation of Environmental Programs and Permits. You will represent the environmental function while creating/driving strategy and developing site-specific action plans for the environmental staff.

What You’ll Do:

  • Own and project manage environmental permitting process and manage regulatory requirements, permit filing, and other key compliance milestones, liaising with consultants, regulators, and internal engineers as needed
  • Create cogent, succinct written deliverables to represent Divert to regulators and other stakeholders
  • Point of contact for environmental permitting and compliance matters with site staff, regulatory agencies, and clients
  • Represents the construction and engineering leadership team as needed providing updates on critical environmental needs and processes
  • Manage direct staff and be a mentor and leader to the engineering and construction team
  • Create a strategic plan to scale and evolve environmental programs.
  • Identify industry (including regulatory) changes that may affect site operations and assist in developing and implementing plans to meet compliance requirements.
  • Select, develop, and evaluate staff to ensure the efficient operation of the function. Works with and advises staff on administrative policies and procedures.

What You’ll Need:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering (preferred), Life Sciences, Natural Sciences or related field
  • Other Professional designation in Health and Safety a plus
  • Minimum 10 years of previous Environment, Health, and Safety experience in an industrial or related environment
  • 5+ years of food processing, oil and gas, or similar industry experience preferred
  • 5+ years of proven experience leading direct reports
  • Ability to travel approximately 35% annually
  • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant work experience may be considered
  • Must have working knowledge of state and federal environmental regulatory programs, including by not limited to NPDES, RCRA, CAA.

What Will Put You Ahead:

  • Prior experience preparing environmental permit applications across multiple states, including but not limited to; Northeast (MA, PA, NY), Midwest (IL, IN) and the Pacific Northwest (CA, WA, OR).
  • Prior project or program management responsibilities over multiple operating locations is preferred.
  • ASP, CSP, CIH, CHMM, or other professional certification.
