About the Role

OPTrust is looking for an exceptional corporate lawyer to join our Toronto-based Legal Services team. In this position you will be providing critical advice on a wide range of strategic organizational initiatives, as well as governance and policy matters, to various OPTrust teams, senior management, and the board of trustees.

A motivated self-starter with a team-oriented mindset, you will provide solution-based legal and risk management advice on various enterprise matters. In support of Legal Services’ focus on high performance and partnership in its delivery model, the role involves material responsibility for effecting continuous improvement and innovation in our legal operations and legal processes. Our ideal candidate is therefore passionate about legal operations, knowledge management and technology and data.

What You’ll Do

  • Advise on complex corporate and commercial issues, and risk management strategies.
  • Working closely with the Corporate Secretary, support enterprise governance and policy matters.
  • Support technology and innovation enhancements including assessing and managing generative AI tools from a legal and policy perspective.
  • Advise on information management and data governance, and system implementation and administration.
  • Prepare and monitor the Legal Services division budget, forecasting, and accruals.
  • Develop and report on key operational metrics for the Legal division to better inform decision-making.
  • Optimize and maintain legal technology to build team capacity and increase efficiency.
  • Leverage data resources to provide insights for resource planning and improving workflow Manage external counsel usage, spending and relationships.
  • Manage a variety of legal department initiatives as well as cross-organizational projects.

What You Bring

  • LLB/JD.
  • 6-8 years of corporate experience at a top-tier law firm or in-house legal department.
  • Governance and policy, legal operations and/or technology and data experience an asset.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, adaptable and flexible.
  • Motivation to bring about continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Ability and desire to build relationships and work collaboratively with various stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated legal and business judgment.
  • Proven organizational and analytical skills with the ability to project manage critical work to completion.
  • Ability to manage several files at the same time while maintaining high standards.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and look for opportunities to add value.
