The Department of Public Safety and Justice Studies, in the Faculty of Health and Community Studies in partnership with kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre, invites applications for a full‑time, tenure‑track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2026, subject to final budgetary approval. In this appointment, you will be cross‑appointed to kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre during the initial three years in the position, with potential for renewal. MacEwan is seeking an individual with lived First Nations, Métis, or Inuit (Indigenous) experiences who is grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing. As MacEwan University’s Indigenous Centre, kihêw waciston offers personal, academic, financial, and cultural support for students and is open to everyone in the MacEwan community. You will work closely with kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre and have good relationships with Indigenous communities. Initially, in addition to teaching a reduced course load in the Department of Public Safety and Justice Studies for the duration of the cross‑appointment, you will provide consultation and participate in developing an Indigenous‑focused curricula to align with institutional priorities, and foster community engagement. This will involve collaborating with the Associate Vice‑President of Indigenous Initiatives and Engagement and kihêw waciston to plan and organize faculty educational opportunities and culturally sensitive programming, evaluations, and events. After this period, you will be assigned a standard faculty workload in your home department. The Department of Public Safety and Justice Studies encompasses five programs: the Bachelor of Public Safety and Justice degree, Police Studies diploma, Investigative Studies diploma, Community Justice and Corrections diploma, and Emergency Communications & Response certificate. These programs focus on equipping students with the knowledge and skills required to build safe, secure, and just communities. Faculty members with strong connections to professional practice prepare students to protect and serve our communities. In this position, your focus will be on teaching, primarily across all programs. You will have evidence of effective teaching, the ability to support students in achieving success, and the ability to provide leadership in implementing initiatives. You should have in‑depth knowledge and professional experience in both the theoretical and practical aspects of the Canadian criminal justice system, with particular emphasis on: Diversity/Multiculturalism and Justice Restorative/Transformative Justice Contemporary Criminal Justice Interventions, and/or Trends in Public Safety and Justice. You may also be expected to facilitate and supervise students in field placements across a variety of agencies. Qualifications You must have, or be close to completion of, a master’s degree in a related discipline. You will demonstrate a primary commitment to undergraduate teaching and an ongoing research program. Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous communities, including their diverse backgrounds and culture, socio‑economic issues, and educational needs, is strongly preferred. You will demonstrate ethical engagement and collaboration with Indigenous communities. You should submit a cover letter and curriculum vitae that demonstrate a highly developed knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures and contemporary issues with a proven ability to engage with Indigenous communities.
