Join a team that has the environment down to a science.Your OpportunityThe Ecosystems Team has an opportunity for an experienced Intermediate Fisheries Biologist in one of our Ontario offices. The successful candidate will join our team of aquatic and terrestrial biologists who value teamwork and enjoy working in an environment with diverse and dynamic projects.Stantec has a flexible workplace strategy, which allows staff to flexibly work between home and office.Your Key ResponsibilitiesManage tasks according to approved scopes of work, and deliver quality reports on schedule and within budgetCollaborate with other teams and Project Managers to plan, coordinate and deliver field programs that meet the project objectivesOccasionally conduct field investigations, oversee and implement field data collection, including fish community surveys, aquatic habitat assessments and fish rescuesPrepare and/or contribute to technical reports, including writing, coordinating, and analyzing large datasetsContribute to project proposals and budgets, ensuring they align with client needs and project requirementsPrepare materials and submissions for regulatory agency reviews and correspond with regulatory agency staff regarding provincial and/or federal permits and authorizations for fish, fish habitat, and aquatic species at riskUnderstand current practices and techniques for sampling and analysis of fish communities, fish habitat and water quality data from aquatic environmentsConduct background data reviews and interpretation using provincial and federal online databases summarizing watercourse and water body information, and fish community and aquatic species at risk dataParticipate in and apply Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Policies, Procedures, Standards and Guidelines in the execution of all workYour Capabilities And CredentialsProven technical, communication, writing and organization skillsKnowledge of current provincial and federal government regulatory requirements as they apply to fish and fish habitat, including aquatic species at riskStrong knowledge of freshwater ecology in OntarioRequired experience in:Preparing proposals to meet client and project requirementsDeveloping aquatic field programs and methods to meet specific project objectivesLeading field crews in the execution of fish and fish habitat field programs, including fish sampling and identificationCollecting, assembling and analyzing ecological dataTechnical writingAdditional AssetsClass I Electrofishing or Class II Backpack Electrofishing CertificationExperience in Water Assessment Requirements under O.Reg 359/09 (Renewable Energy Approvals)Application of the MTO Fisheries Protocol and Environmental Guide for FisheriesRegistered in MTO RAQS for Fisheries Assessment or Fisheries Contract SpecialistExperience in implementing the Evaluation, Classification and Management of Headwater Drainage Features GuidelinesFamiliarity with the Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol (OSAP)Use of mobile digital data collection toolsCertified Inspector of Sediment and Erosion Control (CISEC)First Aid certification (training will be provided if needed)Education And ExperienceA Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, or Environmental Sciences or a technical diploma in Fish and Wildlife or Ecosystem Management is requiredMinimum of 5 years of experience as a fisheries biologist, preferably working in the environmental consulting industry, with experience in freshwater ecosystems in OntarioField work may include exposure to the elements, including inclement weather.
