OverviewJoin to apply for the Mechanical Designer (1-Year Contract) role at BWXT. BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada Inc. (BWXT NEC) has an international reputation for excellence in the supply of nuclear fuel and fuel handling systems and service for CANDU reactors. This role is for the Peterborough, Ontario site.BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group designs, manufactures, develops, tests, supplies parts, and provides service for on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling. The company is the original designer of automated systems enabling 24/7 on-power refueling of CANDU reactors. The equipment is used in many Canadian nuclear power plants and supports carbon-free energy and lifesaving medical isotopes. There are opportunities to learn and grow in the nuclear industry in Ontario.Summary: Reporting to the Design Services Manager, the Mechanical Designer supports the technical direction for projects and interfaces with internal and external customers. The role involves collaboration with the Mechanical Engineering department and focuses on the design of mechanical equipment and systems for CANDU reactors, including conceptual and detailed design and development of automated and semi-automated fuelling machines, medical isotope systems, robotic systems, and maintenance tooling.ResponsibilitiesParticipate in the development, modelling and drafting of designs for automated and semi-automated equipment (piping, machined parts, assemblies, welded fabrications) using 2D and 3D CAD software (SOLIDWORKS, Inventor, AutoCAD).Collaborate with teams of Professional Engineers and Technologists in an engineering environment.Produce and update detail part drawings, assembly drawings, layouts, and bills of material.Component selection and application of dimensional tolerances (GD&T) and manufacturability/assembly (DFMA) techniques.Provide technical support to Engineering, Procurement and Manufacturing personnel.Participate in design reviews and customer review meetings, presenting technical data and design inputs.Occasional travel to customer site locations within Ontario.Accountable for cost and schedule on assigned projects.Ensure compliance with processes, industry codes and standards, quality systems, and contractual requirements.Support process change through process enhancement and technology introduction.May support proposal development and scope/estimating.Identify project risks and communicate resolutions to the leadership team.Provide health and safety assurance for all projects and activities.Short term travel may be required for meetings with clients and stakeholders.RequiredMechanical Engineering Technologist (CET) or equivalent with related mechanical design experience.Experience with 3D parametric CAD software, preferably SOLIDWORKS or Autodesk Inventor.Working knowledge of drafting techniques and GD&T.Ability to independently create drawings using various software packages.Knowledge of machining practices and manufacturability constraints.Effective communication and collaboration with others.Problem solving skills and independent decision-making ability.Strong attention to detail and understanding of engineering change control concepts.Ability to multitask and work with minimal supervision.Creative and innovative thinking.DesiredExperience in design of mechanical systems.Membership in OACETT or other certifying organization.Experience with Product Data Management (PDM) for CAD file management.Knowledge of Ontario CANDU or other ECC processes.Experience in the CANDU Nuclear Industry.Familiarity with CSA Nuclear Codes and Standards and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes and Standards.Knowledge of machine design and DFMA.Ability to interface with project team members, vendors and customers to ensure scope and project execution per schedule and budget.Ability to work on scheduled tasks independently and coordinate with cross-functional team members.We thank you for your interest.
