As the oldest and largest animal shelter and welfare organization in Manitoba, WHS has been a vital part of the community for over 115 years. Each year, more than 8,500 animals benefit from the state-of-the-art facility built in 2007 to provide care and a haven. How you’ll make a difference as a Senior Veterinarian: Reporting to the Director, Clinic Operations, the Senior Veterinarian will help lead a team of veterinarians, RVTS, and dedicated clinic staff to provide life-changing care to animals. The Senior Veterinarian will be key in helping to oversee WHS shelter medicine, ensuring the well-being of the animals in our care, and community support programs that help to keep people and their pets together. The Senior Veterinarian will be a mentor, helping clinic staff gain experience to enhance animals’ health and contribute to positive community impact. Work with a close-knit, cohesive team under a manager and director who promote a healthy work-life balance. Team Responsibilities: Supervise the veterinary team on day-to-day basis, including mentoring, training, clinic flow, and client communication. Provide excellence in veterinary care to WHS patients, including medicine, surgery, and dentistry. Answer medical questions from other departments and manage questions/concerns from the public. Support the Director, Clinic Operations, and Clinic Medical Manager in the management and development of clinic programs. Be the proxy for when Director, Clinic Operations is not available. Help to develop, support, and update WHS clinic policies and procedures. Provide team members with positive coaching and feedback, building a work environment that reflects the WHS values and culture. In collaboration with Director, Clinic Operations and Clinic Medical Manager, coordinate and facilitate performance conversations for veterinarians and RVTS, per established standard. Support the Director and Medical Manager with recruitment, interviews, and selection of new employees. Provide input, participate, and make recommendations on corrective actions, as requested, for performance-related issues. Be guided by and guide by empathy and being trauma-informed with a harm reduction lens for true community service. Operations and Oversight: Provide a premier level of care and services to animals and people in accordance with WHS mission, values, goals, and management philosophies. Individual animal care, including physical exams, vaccinations, prescribing and administering medications; ordering and performing appropriate diagnostics; competently performing medical and surgical procedures in a safe and efficient manner. Herd health: Assess population health through data analysis, rounds with leadership team, and address population-level issues through changes to protocols, policies, and/or procedures. Conducts and/or directs humane euthanasia procedures when required. Liaise with other groups requesting services from the Winnipeg Humane Society. Qualifications: Education: A Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree; Currently licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the province of Manitoba or suitable eligibility. Experience: Excellence in knowledge and experience in small animal surgery, medicine, dentistry, and shelter medicine. At least 5 years of surgical experience. At least 2 years of management experience. Previous experience with managing a budget. Skills: Excellent surgical skills, dentistry, and shelter medicine skills. Excellent leadership, teaching, and communication skills. Excellent typing and good computer skills. Assets: Knowledge of Indigenous culture and Truth and Reconciliation. Personal Attributes: Enthusiasm and commitment to mentorship and working in a fun, fast-paced environment. Enjoys a high volume, fast-paced environment. Excels at working as part of a team.
