You will join RBC Insurance’s Active Data Platform team, working with professionals dedicated to delivering solutions to the insurance business and its clients. We are looking for an experienced and innovative Director of Data Engineering who will lead the strategy, architecture, and delivery of an Insurance Cloud Data Lakehouse using Snowflake. The role will enable advanced analytics, regulatory reporting and AI‑driven insights for the insurance business, combining deep technical leadership with strong business partnership. What will you do? Collaborate closely with insurance business leaders, product managers, data scientists and IT stakeholders to translate data needs into engineering priorities and deliver trusted, high‑quality data assets. Define and own the data engineering roadmap aligned with the enterprise data strategy and business transformation agenda. Design and implement a scalable, secure, and governed data Lakehouse on Snowflake, integrating structured, semi‑structured and unstructured data across distribution systems. Lead technical discussions and collaborate with enterprise architects to drive design and development of the target architecture for the cloud data lakehouse, integrating Snowflake, dbt, Kafka/streaming, and data model/governance layers. Oversee the design and deployment of the Snowflake‑based data lakehouse, partnering with business to prioritise data domains (Policy, Claims, Risk, Customer, Broker, etc.). Enable data sharing and consumption models for analytics, Power BI dashboards and AI/ML applications. Modernise legacy data environments into a unified cloud platform supporting real‑time analytics, self‑service BI and AI/ML workloads. Establish data engineering standards for the transformation journey, ensuring data quality in collaboration with Data Governance, Architecture and data consumers. Stay abreast of releases on the Snowflake platform, AI/ML, particularly Agentic AI and process automation, and evaluate applicability to the insurance sector. Establish and enforce robust data quality checks and monitoring frameworks, ensuring resilience, uptime and disaster recovery for all production systems. What do you need to succeed? Must Have 8+ years of data engineering experience, focusing on modern data stacks, Snowflake and cloud technologies. 3+ years in a leadership role managing high‑performing data engineering teams. Hands‑on experience with Snowflake, data modelling, warehousing and governance. Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure). Strong understanding of data engineering principles: pipelines, architectures and workflows. Experience with data governance, security and compliance frameworks. Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT or a related field. Nice to Have Experience with Apache Beam, Apache Spark or AWS Glue. Experience with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines. Knowledge of data science and machine learning concepts. Experience with agile development and Git. Snowflake, cloud computing or data engineering certification. Education Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, AI, Electrical Engineering or a related quantitative field.
