The role of AML Subject Matter Expert for Personal Banking Canada providing direction and advice to Personal lines of business assigned in Canada. This role supports the Director, AML Compliance Advisory Personal Banking Canada by providing advice, risks identification and evaluation related to the review of new products, changes to existing products, acquisitions, policies and procedures, risk assessments and projects.

What will you do?

  • AML Subject Matter Expert supporting Personal Banking Canada, providing advisory to personal lines of business assigned in Canada in respect of their Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Anti-Terrorist Financing (ATF) regulatory compliance requirements, responsibilities and issues.
  • Participate in business projects, new products, changes to existing products & delivery channels, acquisitions, strategies and new businesses to advise on AML / ATF regulations, complete risk assessments, identify AML compliance issues and guidance in the development and implementation of appropriate AML / ATF policies, procedures and controls.
  • Pro-actively stays engaged with assigned business lines to support their initiatives and identify AML / ATF risks and collaborate with the business to mitigate, reviewing and approving business lines Risk Triage Assessments (RTAs), Initiative Risk Profiles (IRPs) where applicable, ensuring adequate controls are in place in support of AML / ATF risks.
  • Escalate AML / ATF / GES / ABAC issues to the Director AML Compliance Advisory Personal Banking Canada as appropriate and as required.
  • Liaise with business partners, internal Financial Crimes partners, Enterprise Operational Risk, Law Group, Retail Operations, Bank Compliance, Fraud and GRM to provide direction and expertise in respect of AML / ATF issues.
  • Liaise with business partners in coordinating AML regulatory examinations, audit and reviews, issue responses, data and documents production as appropriate.
  • Ensure identified risks, audit and regulatory issues and deficiencies identified through oversight testing by the Control Testing and Reporting (CTR) team are addressed appropriately.
  • Work collaboratively with Global Economic Sanctions (GES) and Anti-Bribery, Anti-Corruption (ABAC) teams for sanctions and bribery & corruption risks assessments that identified as a result of business projects.
  • Support the Director AML Compliance Advisory Personal Banking Canada, providing input in respect of new proposed regulatory revisions to AML regulations in Canada and liaise with Canadian Banking business partners for impact assessment.
  • Support the Director AML Compliance Advisory Personal Banking Canada for completing annual risk assessments with the business, update the regulatory compliance management (RCM) inventory and controls, oversee oversight testing and provide requirements to CTR, update AML Policies and provide input to AML training course as well as deliver tailored training to businesses where a need is identified.
  • Maintain sufficient understanding of Canadian Banking products and services to recognize AML / ATF risks and vulnerabilities and opportunities to leverage aspects of overall compliance programs for efficient and effective risk coverage.
  • Interact with functional partners including Law Group, Operational Risk, Bank Compliance, Fraud and GRM to collaborate on issues and identify solutions.
  • Work proactively with the business to manage AML / ATF risks, with the ability and confidence to demonstrate "credible challenge" challenging management, escalating issues and pressing for change while highlighting and emphasizing this critical role as the second line of defense.

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • In depth knowledge of Canadian AML / ATF laws and regulations.
  • 7-10 years of AML or financial institution industry experience: Knowledge of products and services related to personal banking.
  • Strong influencing, collaboration, relationship building and communication skills.
  • Strategic mindset, with significant knowledge and understanding of RBC businesses and organization.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, inquisitive nature and comfort challenging current practices.
  • Ability to effectively manage competing priorities.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational / time-management skills.
  • A university degree.

Nice-to-have

  • Understanding of relevant RBC business units.
  • Solid working knowledge of banking operations and the financial services regulatory landscape, ideally with several years experience in Risk Management, Compliance or Internal Audit.
