Cardiology Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT)
Reports to:
Specialty RVT Team Lead (Oncology/Cardiology)
Prerequisites:
- Active member of the ABVMA & ABVTA
- Ability to lift 50 lbs (22 kg)
- Ability to be on time and prepared to work at the beginning of your scheduled shift
- Excellent communication, critical thinking, and time-management skills
- Commitment to ongoing education and professional development
- Willingness to learn
- Confidence with basic RVT skills including monitoring of sedation/anesthesia of cardiac patients
- Proficiency with monitoring equipment (pulse oximetry, ECG, capnography, doppler blood pressure)
- Ability to communicate and collaborate to work with other departments
Summary:
This RVT is responsible for ensuring effective communication within the cardiology team and promoting collaboration with other specialty services to deliver exceptional medical care to all patients. There will be a focus on client communication and education, which will include providing home care and medication instruction to owners and supporting them with follow-up care and questions.

In addition to all the duties listed in the RVT job description, this person may be asked to cross-train in other specialty departments (Internal Medicine, Oncology, and Surgery/Anesthesia) and be able to provide coverage as needed. Training will be provided, but the candidate should already have confidence in basic RVT skills.
Essential Job Functions
- Effectively communicate with clients via phone, email, and in person.
- Anesthetize/sedate and monitor patients for surgery or other procedures, including understanding higher risk anesthesia for the cardiac patient.
- Understand and assist with advanced diagnostics such as echocardiograms, ECGs, Holter monitoring and telemetry.
- Assist with thoracocentesis, pericardiocentesis and other procedures
- Monitor cardiac rhythm and recognize abnormalities which may require intervention.
- Produce diagnostic quality radiographs.
- Actively participate in CPR, including use of defibrillator.
- Fill prescriptions, relay orders for compounded medications.
- Use in-house laboratory equipment and submission reference laboratory tests as needed.
- Admit and set- up patients for hospitalization and transfer to ICU.
- Generate estimates and review informed consent with clients.
