Detailed Overview Reporting to the Supervisor/Site Coordinator, the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer performs abdominal, obstetrical, pelvic, peripheral vascular, small parts and echocardiography ultrasound examinations, observes patient safety practices, receives and completes requisitions, enters data into the diagnostic imaging information system, prepares patients, and conducts examinations utilizing ultrasound and Doppler techniques. The role may include venipuncture for contrast media injections as directed, and participation in committees, teams, and approved research projects. Responsibilities Receives and prepares patients for testing by completing requisitions, reviewing patient history, correlating clinical history with examination, entering information into the diagnostic imaging information system, explaining procedures, and ensuring patient comfort. Performs ultrasound procedures on abdominal, obstetrical, pelvic, peripheral vascular, small parts, and echocardiography sections, positioning patients, placing probes, and utilizing ultrasound and Doppler techniques to obtain images, labeling and archiving data, and may perform venipuncture for contrast media injections as directed. May be required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an emergency. Assists in procedural rooms by setting up biopsy trays, assisting radiologists/cardiologists with interventional procedures, labeling requisitions, and providing support and comfort to patients. Monitors patients during procedures, observing and responding to possible contrast media reactions or other emergencies in accordance with facility policies. Checks resultant images for technical quality and completeness, prepares technical worksheets, and discusses images with radiologists/cardiologists to ensure examinations address designated requirements. Facilitates the workflow of the designated work area by checking requisitions against departmental standards, regulating inpatient examination time, arranging transportation of patients, and transporting patients as required. Monitors equipment performance and performs quality control duties in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, recording results and identifying malfunctioning equipment for repair. Demonstrates procedures and equipment usage to staff, including residents, technologists, and students; participates in orientation of new employees and provides input on personnel progress. Participates in maintaining patient and hospital records by entering data into the diagnostic imaging and hospital information systems as required. Participates in team/department activities to enhance delivery of care, including identifying improvement processes and drafting/revising guidelines and policies. Participates in approved research and special projects with supervisors and other health professionals, reviewing literature, collecting data, and providing updates. Maintains a clean and safe work area by disinfecting probes, wiping equipment, tissues, and storing items appropriately. Maintains and updates own clinical knowledge, developing a professional development plan in collaboration with designated personnel, reviewing progress, and ensuring goals are met. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements, immediately reporting unsafe situations to a supervisor or appropriate personnel. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education, Training and Experience Must be a graduate of a recognized training program in Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography and Diagnostic General Sonography and certified with Sonography Canada or the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), or have passed the Sonography Canada Skills Assessment (CCSA). Completion of an Intravenous Therapy training course or equivalent experience is required. Skills and Abilities Demonstrated knowledge of theory and practice for sonography procedures including abdominal, obstetrical, pelvic, peripheral vascular, small parts and cardiac sonography. Demonstrated knowledge of aseptic techniques. Demonstrated knowledge and practice of safe work procedures with diagnostic sonographic and medical imaging equipment. Knowledge of imaging acquisition applications and digital imaging storage and distribution networks such as PACS. Knowledge of research process and methodology. Ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, physicians, staff, and external agencies. Ability to operate related equipment independently and collaboratively. Ability to establish workload priorities and work with others. Proficiency in CPR techniques. Computer skills to effectively use a computerized client care information system. Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
