Opportunity In this important role, you will support alternative dispute resolution and workplace restoration mechanisms, including education, coaching, mediation, and facilitation. You will provide information to Service members and offer guidance to supervisors to effectively address workplace conflict, harassment, and discrimination - helping foster a respectful and inclusive work environment. You will exercise professional and sound judgment in delivering resolution services and provide support and guidance to the Service on alternative dispute resolution and other intervention techniques. In consultation with the Workplace Resolution Consultant, you will assist in identifying barriers to creating and maintaining respectful workplaces within the Toronto Police Service and contribute to developing and implementing effective remedial strategies. Responsibilities Support the design and implementation of services, initiatives and interventions, including coaching, facilitation and mediation, to address issues around incivility, unprofessionalism, harassment and discrimination in the workplace. Provide guidance to supervisors, including recommending remediation strategies for resolving inappropriate behaviours. Educate members, including supervisors and unit leaders, about their obligations and responsibilities regarding workplace harassment, discrimination, and reprisal, including the complaint reporting process. Collaborate with colleagues and other units, including the Professional Standards Unit, to triage complaints and to address complex, sensitive workplace matters. Support the ongoing modernization of programs, policies, and practices to enhance professionalism and inclusion in the workplace. Explore and conduct mediation or other resolution techniques to address workplace conflict, including complaints of harassment and discrimination, to achieve satisfactory outcomes for all parties. Take appropriate steps, including conducting interviews with involved parties, to determine if and when alternative resolution and/or restoration services are appropriate, depending on the nature, complexity, and severity of the issues raised, and willingness of the parties involved to engage. Conduct thorough interviews, and gather and examine relevant documentation to identify, analyze and address conflict amongst colleagues in preparation for resolution and restoration efforts and at the conclusion, as warranted. Make recommendations on the best course of action for resolution, where appropriate, accounting for operational needs, and cultural and/or reputational impacts to the Service. Educate disputing parties about the Service’s alternative resolution program, including opportunities for education, coaching, mediation and facilitation. Prepare materials, such as guides, forms, and other communications to provide key information to members about alternative resolution services and processes. Participate in the development and implementation of strategies to increase awareness and understanding of alternative resolution services. Initiate coaching sessions for individuals who experience hesitancy or uncertainty about raising and receiving workplace concerns or issues, or for other situations, where appropriate. Proactively identify and analyze barriers in the organization or other systemic issues, in consultation with Workplace Resolution Consultant, which would benefit from workplace restoration or alternative resolution services, and creatively design solutions for improvement. Maintain awareness of new trends and developments in the area of conflict management, including barriers to achieving workable resolutions, and incorporate this knowledge in the support and development of services provided. Work with colleagues and the Toronto Police College to develop and deliver trainings on alternative resolution services, in partnership with external stakeholders as necessary. Collaborate and develop strong working relationships with key internal stakeholders to address issues and devise solutions to workplace conflict. Support in the maintenance of a Service database and tracking system for alternative resolution and workplace restoration services and provide reports as needed. Perform other duties, functions and assignments inherent to the position. Education / Experience A university degree in a related discipline such as mediation, diversity, labour relations, law, social work, sociology, psychology, or human resources, or an approved equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Minimum of three years experience working in conflict management, workplace restoration, mediation or similar role. Advanced training in a related field is considered an asset. Canadian Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation, particularly with additional courses or training concerning equity and inclusion is considered an asset. Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR)/Conflict Management certification is considered an asset. Demonstrated knowledge of conflict management theories and practices, including effective mediation and facilitation techniques, change management and workplace restoration. Experience dealing with resolution of human rights and/or workplace harassment issues, preferably in large, complex, hierarchical organizations. Demonstrated knowledge, communication and consultative skills to provide impartial and well-informed guidance, including to senior leaders, when dealing with sensitive issues involving conflict, human rights and other human resources matters such as performance management and other workplace concerns. Strong acuity and situational awareness to recognize and take into account sensitive situations and develop appropriate responses to difficult, multi-dimensional issues causing conflicts in the workplace. Understanding of, and alignment, with TPS core values, including a member-centered approach to conflict management and workplace restoration. Exceptional conflict resolution skills and ability to deal with deeply personal issues and situations in the workplace. Strong interpersonal, presentation and speaking skills with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations. Highly developed skills in building and maintaining partnerships both internally and externally while balancing a range of stakeholder interests. Strong research, analytical and issues management skills to identify and resolve complex disputes. Computer experience required, including standard office computer applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook).
