Role: Health Physicist
Work Location: Port Hope, ON

Duration: Permanent

The HP is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the project radiation protection program and will deliver effective oversight to field implementation of CNSC and CNL/PHAI-compliant RP program elements. Much of this work will be outdoors, in the field.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Prepare and implement radiation protection protocols for sites undergoing remediation
  • Provide subject matter expertise during work planning and execution activities
  • Conduct ALARA assessments
  • Produce job specific RP instructions, Radiological Work Assessments, and Radiological Work Permits
  • Oversee and assess radiation surveys, including the direction of and assistance to radiation technicians
  • Provide direction and support to construction and other contractors on radiation protection protocols
  • Oversee the dosimetry program, including providing dose estimates
  • Prepare and implement standard operating procedures for direct-reading radiation detection instruments, including validating their use through calculations
  • Management of airborne radiological monitors
  • Ensure control and calibration of all radiation detection equipment
  • Prepare calculations for the shipment of low-level radioactive waste
  • Preparing reports, as required
  • Deliver RP training, occasionally
  • Proactively monitor work performance, identify any potential risks/gaps of scopes of work performed
  • Understand and apply the related nuclear regulatory documents, nuclear codes and standards
  • Participate in identifying resources and staff training requirements, and provide inputs/feedback on performance appraisals for the RP team staff
  • Provide technical guidance, working instructions and training/mentorship to junior HP/RP professionals

Skills / Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in providing radiation protection support
  • Excellent technical communication skills, including technical writing and document preparation/review
  • Strong interpersonal skills; effective in a team environment
  • A quick learner able to become familiar with work procedures, plans and programs of existing projects in a short period of time
  • Capable of understanding and appropriately applying prescribed safety and technical procedures and protocols
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of nuclear regulatory documents, nuclear codes and standards
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of nuclear safety culture, concepts and philosophies to assigned tasks
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in the nuclear industry conducting operational health physics acting in an oversight capacity
  • Previous experience working on nuclear remediation or decommissioning projects (desired)
  • Strong nuclear safety culture
  • RP instrument setup, use, and troubleshooting
  • Radiation dose assessment for external and internal radiation hazardous
  • Emergency response to radiological upset conditions
  • Shielding calculations
  • Airborne contamination monitoring
  • Transport of dangerous goods, class 7
  • Activity assessments for transport or dose reporting
  • ALARA planning and review
  • Work planning, pre- and post-job briefs
  • Procedural document review, revision, approval

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in sciences, engineering or health physics from an accredited educational institution (required)
  • College diploma / certificate in radiation protection (desired)

Special Features of the Role:

  • Field work can involve temperature extremes and precautions will be taken when this is the case. Ability to stand upright and walk outdoors (sometimes in rugged terrain). Some limited working at heights may be required.
  • Must be capable of wearing PPE, including respirators if required
  • Regular travel within Canada required
  • Occasional international travel may be required
  • The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain necessary site security clearance
  • Have and maintain a valid class G driver’s license
