Senior Substation Physical Design Engineer Location: Alberta (open to candidates based in Saskatchewan or British Columbia). Join our National Power Delivery Team. In this role you will lead the electrical design of medium to high‑voltage utility substations and renewable energy interconnections, applying industry codes and standards to produce innovative, reliable solutions. You will produce physical layouts, plans and elevation views, grounding, conduit and cable trough plans, detailed construction documents, equipment specifications, bills of materials, and set the foundation for safe and efficient energy systems. You will collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure milestones are met and expectations exceeded. What you can expect to do here Perform and direct others in the detailed design of medium to extra high voltage utility substations. Create one‑line diagrams, conduit and cable sizing/routing, substation physical layouts, general arrangements, elevation views, grounding design, lightning design and calculations; develop design criteria documents; select substation equipment; write specifications; develop proposals; estimate construction costs; and schedule projects. Occasional travel will be required. What you’ll bring to WSP Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent from an accredited university. Professional license (P.Eng) or P.L. (Eng.) or ability to obtain within 6 months. Ten (10) or more years of experience in utility substation design. Strong experience with 15kV through 240kV substation design and IEEE/ANSI standards. Proven experience taking a written design basis memorandum (DBM) or scope of work (SOW) and developing a detailed physical substation design and drawing package with minimal oversight, cross‑coordinating effectively with civil, P&C, and studies engineers. Experience leading design engineers on several concurrent substation projects. EHV substation design experience desirable. Project management and leading multi‑disciplined teams an asset.
