Alberta Reliability Standards CIP Compliance SpecialistJoin to apply for the Alberta Reliability Standards CIP Compliance Specialist role at Suncor.Report to the Manager, Electrical Regulatory Compliance, and provide support to Suncor’s Oilsands Operations to ensure compliance with ARS CIP Standards for Suncor’s power generation and transmission assets. This role offers subject‑matter expertise on a broad range of CIP compliance matters, including cybersecurity and physical security initiatives, and works collaboratively across Suncor business units to ensure the reliability and security of Alberta’s Bulk Electric System (BES) assets in alignment with Suncor’s operational and regulatory commitments.Minimum RequirementsA bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, computer science, business management, information technology, or a related field5–7 years of relevant experience in the electricity/utility industry, specifically in NERC or ARS CIP compliance rolesIn‑depth understanding of NERC/ARS CIP standards and regulatory frameworksProfessional certifications related to compliance or CIP (e.g., CISA, CISSP)Knowledge of Alberta Interconnected Electrical System (AIES) operationPrevious experience in dealing with AESO, MSA, and/or NERCPrevious experience with the AESO’s Alberta Risk‑Based Compliance Monitoring Program and MSA’s Compliance ProcessExperience identifying and assessing compliance‑related events and working collaboratively to conduct root‑cause analysis investigations and support implementation of corrective actionsProject management expertiseAbility to clearly define complex multivariable problemsStrong proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, particularly Excel, Word, SharePoint, and PowerBIDemonstrated willingness to adopt new technologies that enhance compliance efficiency (e.g., ServiceNow, Enablon)Strong stakeholder management and non‑authoritative leadership skillsExceptional interpersonal, written and oral communication skillsExceptional time‑management skills to effectively manage competing demands from various stakeholders with tight timelinesPrior regulatory compliance or cybersecurity auditing experience preferred, including past involvement in AESO Compliance Audit processesResponsibilitiesEnsure compliance with ARS CIP requirements by developing, implementing, and maintaining compliance‑related documentationCoordinate AESO compliance audits and self‑certification, preparing, collecting, and validating audit and self‑certification evidence and providing it to AESOLead the development of self‑reports and mitigation plans to MSA to prevent future recurrence of eventsActively monitor and remain current on regulatory changes and industry best practices related to ARS and NERC CIPWork and interact with regulatory organizations (e.g., AESO, MSA, WECC, NERC), providing input on new ARS consultationServe as ARS CIP compliance subject‑matter expert, delivering training and guidance to Suncor business units on ARS compliance requirements and proceduresMaintain data consistency and initiate cleanup actions as necessarySupport and facilitate the creation of operating procedures, programs, compliance documentation, and standards with business unitsCoordinate with external auditors and regulatory bodies during compliance audits and assessmentsAssist in the development and implementation of cybersecurity measures to protect critical infrastructureEstablish effective working relationships with internal and external partners to track follow‑up actions (e.g., mitigation plans and regulatory compliance controls) to completionCollaborate with internal SMEs to identify and advise on opportunities to enhance internal controls and processes for ARS CIP where appropriateMonitor and report on the effectiveness of compliance programs and initiativesParticipate in risk assessments and develop mitigation plans to address identified risksAnalyze and interpret compliance data to identify trends and areas for improvementContribute to monthly electrical compliance stewardship reporting and KPI developmentLocation and Other Key DetailsWork out of either the Calgary head office located in the Suncor Energy Centre (150 – 6th Ave SW) or the Base Plant site in Fort McMurray, AlbertaRegular 40‑hour work week, Monday to Friday, with potential for extended work hours based on business needsOccasional business travel (10–15%)Internal compensation guidelines apply; pay band generally based on years of experience and scope of workWhy Suncor?Suncor’s operations include oil sands development, production and upgrading; offshore oil and gas; petroleum refining in Canada and the U.S.; and the company’s Petro‑Canada retail and wholesale distribution networks, including Canada’s Electric Highway™, a coast‑to‑coast network of fast‑charging electric vehicle stations.With a strong strategy for growth and a long‑standing commitment to sustainability, operational excellence, capital discipline, and technology and innovation, Suncor offers a solid foundation for building a career.
