OverviewStantec is seeking a Terrestrial Ecologist or Environmental Scientist with experience in vegetation ecology and wetlands to join our Environmental Services Team in Atlantic Canada.Depending on candidate qualifications, this will be a contract position with the potential to transition to a full-time permanent position based on performance and availability of work, or a full-time permanent position. Here, you can apply your passion and collaborate with top environmental professionals on work that’s vital to our clients and the communities they serve.Your ResponsibilitiesPlan and/or participate in field programs, along with associated data entry/management, which may include the following inventories and assessments depending on technical competency:Wetland delineation and functional assessmentVascular plant surveys and vegetation community characterizationLichen surveysDesign and implement baseline wetland and vegetation surveys for species and ecosystemsContribute to and/or write technical reports such as results of baseline desktop and field studiesAssessments of potential effects to plants and ecosystems as a result of development projectsRecommendations for suitable management and mitigation measuresEnvironmental monitoring and management plansRestoration and/or revegetation plans and designsTravel to various local and/or remote field sites with overnight travel sometimes required, and occasional 1-2 week shifts away from homePromote a strong health and safety culture and actively participate in Stantec’s HSSE ProgramYour Capabilities and CredentialsExperience in the collection of biological and physical field data in wetlands, vascular plants, or lichensKnowledge of NB/NS/PEI/NFLD flora, ecosystem classification, and provincial data collection protocolsA valid driver’s license and good driving recordAble to lift 50 lbs and endure long days of physically and mentally challenging fieldworkAble to work effectively in a team and independently, as requiredWillingness to work in remote locations in a range of weather conditions, with overnight travelTime management skills to balance short-term work with varying priorities and deadlinesStrong communication skills, including verbal, technical writing, and electronic communications; proficiency with Microsoft Office SuiteStrong initiative with the ability to adapt to changing conditions and make independent, informed decisionsKnowledge of current federal and provincial regulatory requirements relating to vegetation and wetlandsAssets (not required but considered)Completion of wetland delineation and/or WESP-AC training coursesExperience planning, coordinating, and implementing field programsExperience working with GIS software and digital data collection toolsEducation and ExperienceA bachelor or graduate degree or technical diploma in biology, ecology, botany, environmental management and/or related environmental field or equivalent skills. Prior experience in environmental consulting is an asset.Additional InformationPlease include information on field-based skills/experience and current health and safety training (First Aid, auxiliary vehicles, etc.).Typical office environment with computer use; field work may involve exposure to the elements.
