Tata Steel Minerals Canada Limited (TSMC) with its headquarters at 1000, Sherbrooke W., Suite 1120, Montreal (Quebec), operates iron ore mines in the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec. TSMC is a joint venture between Tata Steel Limited and the Government of Quebec. The opportunity TSMC is seeking a Welder to join the Maintenance team on a fly-in/fly-out basis (2 weeks on / 2 weeks off) to and from the Menihek region in Labrador, near the town of Schefferville, QC. Operations at our mine site run 24/7 year-round, with standard 12-hour shifts. Main pickup points include: St. John’s, Gander, Deer Lake (NL); Halifax (NS); Moncton (NB); and Montreal (QC). Reporting to the Mechanical Supervisor, the Welder will be responsible for performing welding, cutting, and fabrication activities on mining and processing equipment, ensuring plant reliability and supporting production through high-quality repairs. Responsibilities Perform welding, cutting, and fabrication on structural steel, piping, chutes, tanks, and processing plant equipment. Execute preventive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance welding jobs safely and efficiently. Support shutdowns and turnarounds with equipment rebuilds, liner changes, chute repairs, and structural modifications. Interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications to plan and complete welding tasks. Inspect welds to ensure compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements. Assist in maintaining an inventory of welding consumables, gases, and materials. Operate welding and cutting equipment including SMAW, FCAW, MIG, TIG, oxy-fuel, and plasma cutting tools. Support mechanical maintenance crews with fitting, fabrication, and assembly work as needed. Accurately document work performed in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Comply with all safety, health, and environmental policies and procedures. Required Experience Journeyperson Welder with valid Interprovincial Red Seal certification. Minimum 3 years of welding experience in mining, heavy industry, or construction. Proficiency in SMAW, FCAW, MIG, TIG, and oxy-fuel welding and cutting techniques. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, and technical manuals. Experience with mobile and plant equipment welding repairs. Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with maintenance practices. Cross-trade experience or additional trade certifications (e.g., Millwright, Heavy Duty Mechanic, Pipefitter) are considered strong assets and are actively encouraged. Computer literacy: experience with CMMS preferred. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently or as part of a team. Assets: Certification or experience operating mobile equipment such as vacuum trucks, skid steers, mini excavators, loaders, telehandler, etc. Fire training or First Responder certification. Knowledge of metallurgy, weld testing, and non-destructive testing (NDT) is an asset.
