The Royal Columbian Hospital Redevelopment Project (RCHRP) is a multi‑year, multi‑phase project to increase the hospital's capacity, beds and services. Read more about RCHRP Phase two. RCH first opened in 1862, and is a vital referral centre and regional centre of excellence for trauma, critical care, cardiac care, maternity, neonatal intensive care and neurosurgery. When the full redevelopment is complete, the people of British Columbia will have increased access to cardiac, trauma, mental health, maternity and NICU services and beds. Detailed Overview Under the general direction of the Health Services Manager, Allied Health Discipline and reporting to the Clinical Practice Leader, Social Worker, you will provide comprehensive therapeutic clinical counselling services to patients and families in the assigned acute‑care specialty areas, including Oncology, Cardiology, and the Intensive/Critical Care Unit. You will conduct social work and psycho‑social assessments, provide education and consultation, and lead interdisciplinary care planning. You will also develop and deliver in‑services, presentations, psycho‑educational and support groups, and engage in research activities in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. Responsibilities Provide comprehensive therapeutic clinical counselling services, including grief and bereavement, to patients and families in the assigned acute‑care specialty area. Conduct comprehensive social work and psycho‑social assessments of patients and families by interviewing, gathering social data, and interpreting the data in accordance with professional standards and clinical policies. Educate and counsel patients, families, and healthcare professionals on issues related to high‑risk factors, recovery, trauma, bereavement, and community support services. Maintain patient records by documenting assessments, charting information, and preparing progress notes and reports in accordance with established standards. Provide leadership to the interdisciplinary team in care planning, discharge planning, and hospital stay coordination. Communicate with community health and social agencies, collaborate in assessment and management, and make referrals to appropriate resources. Serve as a resource to patients and families, providing information on community resources and facilitating optimal planning. Participate in local committees and planning bodies, engaging in program/practice evaluation and identifying opportunities for improvement. Maintain records such as workload statistics, collate data, analyze trends, and prepare reports as required. Develop, coordinate, and deliver in‑services, presentations, psycho‑educational and support groups, and training related to the assigned specialty area. Initiate, develop, and carry out research activities and program planning relevant to the needs of patients, families, hospital, and community. Maintain broad development in the social work profession by reviewing literature, consulting experts, evaluating practice, and engaging in professional development. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education and Experience Masters Degree of Social Work from an accredited school of Social Work plus two (2) years recent related experience. Current full registration with the BC College of Social Workers. Skills And Abilities Ability to initiate, develop, and carry out research activities. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with patients, families, staff, and community agency personnel. Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload in a complex environment. Ability to operate related equipment. Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position. Applicants with a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from an accredited School of Social Work, and a demonstrated equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
