About the RoleThe Controller is responsible for the financial integrity, visibility, and discipline of Serv-ALL Mechanical Services. This role ensures accurate reporting, strong internal controls, and clear financial insight so leadership can make confident decisions as the business continues to grow.
This is a hands-on financial leadership role that owns the full accounting cycle, including payroll processing, while intentionally building resilience across the finance function through documentation, cross-training, and redundancy. The Controller will work in close partnership with a long-tenured finance generalist, providing support, structure, and back-up coverage while strengthening processes and controls across the team. By collaborating with the generalist, operations, and senior leadership, the Controller translates financial data into practical insight that supports margin control, execution discipline, and scalable growth, without creating dependency on any one individual. This role is well suited to someone who thrives in a project-based, operational environment, is comfortable rolling up their sleeves, and values developing people and systems that scale with the business.
What You’ll DoFinancial Leadership & ReportingLead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processPrepare accurate and timely financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow)Own variance analysis and management reporting (budget vs. actual, margin drivers, labor efficiency)Ensure financial reporting is consistent, reliable, and decision-readyCoordinate year-end review and audit activities with external accountantsSuccess looks like:Leadership trusts the numbers and uses them to make informed, timely decisions. Project Accounting & Margin ControlOwn job costing and project margin reporting across service and project workEnsure appropriate revenue recognition for fixed-price and long-term contractsMonitor labor, materials, subcontractors, and change ordersIdentify margin erosion early and partner with operations to address issuesImprove visibility from estimate → job cost → final marginSuccess looks like:Projects remain financially controlled, and margin issues are identified early rather than after the fact. Forecasting, Cash Flow & PlanningLead forecasting and cash flow planningSupport annual budgeting and periodic reforecastingMonitor working capital, WIP, AR, and cash requirementsProvide scenario analysis to support staffing, growth, and capital decisionsSuccess looks like:Cash flow is predictable and financial risks are visible in advance. Controls, Systems & ScalabilityStrengthen internal controls across finance operations without creating unnecessary bureaucracyBuild and maintain standardized SOPs for core finance processesPartner on Jonas Construction ERP and system enhancements to improve accuracy and scalabilityEnsure compliance with ASPE requirementsSuccess looks like:Finance processes are consistent, auditable, and scalable as the business grows. Transactional Oversight & RedundancyWork alongside the long-tenured finance generalist to:Review and backstop day-to-day bookkeepingStep into AP and AR when requiredStandardize processes and controls across transactional activitiesImprove documentation and cross-training across the finance functionReduce key-person dependency and strengthen business continuitySuccess looks like:No critical finance function is “held by one person,” and the team can operate effectively through absences or change.
