Junior Project Engineer – University of Victoria Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) is a world‑leading organization supporting ocean discovery and technological innovation. ONC is a not‑for‑profit society that manages innovative cabled observatories on behalf of the University of Victoria, providing continuous power and Internet connectivity to scientific instruments in coastal, deep‑ocean and Arctic environments. ONC’s Observatory Operations division provides a reliable digital, coastal and sub‑sea infrastructure that supports the observatory user communities. Marine Operations delivers this mandate through the installation, maintenance and repair of cabled arrays, mobile systems and land‑based assets. The Marine Technology Centre in Sidney serves as the department’s base of operations. The Junior Project Engineer will work in either the Testing & Development (T&D) unit or the Field Services unit. The T&D unit tests and qualifies instruments before deployment, while the Field Services unit prepares for and executes service operations. Both units participate in ship‑based activities and land / marine system trips. The Project Engineer will assist with observatory maintenance, instrument testing, laboratory facilities, equipment design, documentation, and field planning. The role requires ownership and leadership of both engineering and field responsibilities. Key qualifications include a degree in engineering or applied science, 1–2 years of engineering experience in marine environments, and registration or eligibility for Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia as a Professional Engineer (PEng) or Engineer in Training (EIT). The position requires forklift and crane operation certification, first aid, and a Transport Canada approved marine safety course. Technical Skills Diagnose and analyze problems using engineering training Use electronics testing equipment and tools Strong electronic troubleshooting and soldering skills Operate PC‑based command, control and data acquisition systems Knowledge of serial communication protocols (EIA‑232, 422, 485) Experience with computer networking, TCP/IP and UDP Systems‑level hardware integration Mechanical and structural systems design and fabrication Hand and power tools competence 3 D CAD proficiency (e.g., SolidWorks) Documentation, diagramming and technical writing skills Other Skills Strong problem‑solving abilities and independent project management Cooperative team player with strong interpersonal communication Oceanographic instrumentation experience and sea‑support asset familiarity is an asset Forklift certification is an asset Design experience for subsea equipment, underwater enclosures, seabed structures and deployment rigging is an asset Current Standard First Aid or Marine Basic First Aid certificate is desirable Transport Canada approved marine safety course (e.g., Standards in Training, Certifications and Watchkeeping – MED A3) is an asset #J-18808-Ljbffr
