Senior Project Engineer (Engineering, Design & Construction, Wastewater Treatment Plant) – Metro Vancouver Position Status: Full-Time Regular Employee Group: Exempt Location: 4515 Central Boulevard, Burnaby Salary Range: Professional / Technical, Level P3A ($123,587.51 - $145,395.95 annually) Our Liquid Waste Services Department is seeking a Senior Project Engineer who will work in the Engineering, Design & Construction (EDC) group, Wastewater Treatment Plant Division. The division’s projects range from studies to design and construction, with budgets from under $1M to over $100M. The Senior Project Engineer will serve as project manager on this wide portfolio of projects. You are a self‑starter project manager with strong technical knowledge of wastewater treatment facilities, able to step into ongoing projects, build positive relationships, identify and resolve issues, use project‑management tools effectively, and lead the team to successful completion. You are responsible, accountable, and thrive in continuous learning. You can see the big picture and the details, and you develop and execute project work plans with cost‑effective engineering solutions and innovative methods. You coach, mentor, guide others, and manage multiple projects and deadlines. The Senior Project Engineer reports to the Lead Senior Engineer. Responsibilities Perform engineering and project‑management tasks: design, document preparation, specifications, contract administration, budgetary oversight, cost estimates, scheduling, and report writing. Provide project‑management oversight for multiple projects at Metro Vancouver’s wastewater treatment plants during various stages: preliminary design, detailed design, procurement, construction, and post‑construction. Apply professional principles to ensure sound, practical results, analyzing requirements and recommending optimal methods. Manage overall project budgets and control costs, ensuring efficient use of allocated funds. Make decisions and provide recommendations within the scope of policies, using ingenuity to devise original, economical solutions. Prepare and review designs, technical reports, and contract specifications; act as Metro Vancouver’s representative in project and contract matters including site inspections and regulatory determinations. Negotiate on behalf of Metro Vancouver, directing consultants, recommending scope changes, and handling legal, property, public, and government liaison duties. Explain complex concepts, persuade stakeholders, and support teamwork and collaboration. Supervise professional engineers and technical staff, peer review work, provide guidance, and support presentations to board and municipal councils. Serve as a technical specialist on policy initiatives that affect Metro Vancouver. Participate in developing and approving engineering standards within the specialty area. Execute related duties as required; collaborate with other project engineers and assistant project engineers. Qualifications Bachelor of Applied Science in a relevant engineering discipline; 4‑6 years of recent related experience after professional registration, or equivalent combination of training and experience. Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC), or eligibility for immediate membership. Sound technical knowledge of engineering principles and ability to act as a resource for staff. Experience interpreting and applying engineering and technical guidelines, codes, regulations, contracting policies, safety regulations, and corporate/board policies. Proven contract administration and project‑management skills, organizing complex project components for large projects, resolving problems, and using judgment. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including letter, report, and presentation writing. Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build respectful relationships with internal and external contacts in complex, time‑sensitive situations. Ability to work under broad direction, exercise independent judgment, identify opportunities, take initiative, and manage multiple projects and deadlines. Understanding of Metro Vancouver’s organizational culture, processes, and reputation. Ability to supervise, coach, and guide others while enabling individual and team effectiveness. Ability to mentor junior engineers and technical staff. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Project). Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license. Note: Candidates with lesser experience may be considered at the Project Engineer level, with the applicable rate of pay.
