Position Overview The Executive Director (ED) leads SBMC’s day-to-day operations, strengthens ties among itsfour sport programs, and advances the club’s mission of “Dedicated to Youth.” Reporting to theBoard of Directors, the ED will streamline governance, boost volunteer engagement, and buildlong-term strategies to keep youth sports accessible and affordable in South Burnaby. About SBMC Founded in 1952, SBMC has played a key role in South Burnaby’s community life—crowd-sourcing land for Bonsor Park, introducing multiple sports, and fostering volunteerism. Today itruns basketball, soccer, baseball, and volleyball programs, plus social initiatives, all supportedby dedicated volunteers and local partners. Community Contributions Spearheaded development of Suncrest Park, Ron McLean Park, and Bonsor YouthCentre (donated building, 1957). Introduced soccer (1950’s), field hockey, girls’ sports, boxing, and installed lights atBonsor fields. Built the heritage church at Burnaby Village Museum. Acquired land parcels for Bonsor Park, later transferring them to the City at cost. Current Operations Programs: basketball, soccer, baseball, volleyball. Ancillary offerings: Friday Night Ukulele, anniversary celebrations, community events(e.g., Canada Day Street Fest). Home base: allocated space at Bonsor Recreation Centre for meetings, storage, andfunctions. Strengths Strong financial health enabling program stability and growth. Active sport-specific committees with ample participants. High demand: basketball over capacity; soccer holds steady despite local competition; baseball and volleyball expanding under steady leadership. Challenges Heavy reliance on long-term volunteers without formal succession planning. Sports operate in silos, lacking unified strategy. Societal trends (dual-income families, digital distractions) reduce volunteer availabilityand youth engagement. Rising professionalization of youth sports drives up costs and volunteer recruitmentchallenges. Loss of undocumented institutional knowledge when key volunteers leave. Shared Vision Youth benefit mentally, physically, and socially from organized sports. Community thrives when families participate and volunteer. Accessibility and affordability of programs are paramount. A unified “mother club” structure will outperform separate, sport-focused entities. Strategic Goals Standardize governance with records, manuals, and checklists. Implement robust long-term strategies for growth and adaptation. Increase board diversity and participation. Improve inter-sport communication and collaboration. Cultivate a club-wide culture to recruit and retain volunteers. Rationale for an Executive Director Free Board members to focus on high-level decisions by delegating daily operations. Enhance cross-sport communication and ensure the club’s shared goals advance. Lead volunteer strategy, maintain critical timelines, and oversee administrative functions. Serve as SBMC’s ambassador for City relations, fundraising, and community outreach. Term & Time Commitment Initial term: Remainder of 2025 through 2026, with a review at term end Part-time: Approximately 20 hours per week Compensation: Commensurate with experience; final details to be agreed upon Key Responsibilities Governance & Coordination Attend monthly Board meetings and key sport-committee sessions Ensure clear two-way communication between the Board and sport subcommittees Strategic Planning & Execution Support development and implementation of the club’s shared vision and annual plans Create calendars of critical events and operational manuals to safeguard continuity Volunteer Engagement Audit current volunteer usage across programs Design and roll out a club-wide volunteer recruitment and retention strategy Administrative Oversight Organize and secure club records, contracts, and historical documents Supervise day-to-day administrative tasks (mail, facility bookings, clubroom upkeep) Community Relations & Fundraising Serve as club ambassador with the City of Burnaby and external partners Lead or support grant applications, sponsorship outreach, and public presentations Qualifications Minimum 5 years in nonprofit leadership, community relations, or sports administration Proven ability to build and manage cross-functional teams and resolve conflicts Strong written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking Experience with strategic planning, budgeting, and volunteer program design Familiarity with BC Societies Act, gaming grants, and youth-sports dynamics is an asset How to Apply Send your résumé and a brief cover letter outlining your passion for youth sports andcommunity building to info@sbmcsports.com.SBMC thanks all applicants; only those selected for an interview will be contacted. #J-18808-Ljbffr
