Intermediate Process Engineer

We have an immediate opportunity for a dedicated individual to join us as an Intermediate Process Engineer, reporting to the Director, Technology and Innovation, and providing day-to-day supervision of the Operations Specialist and Technology Plant Operator. This is a permanent, full-time role. You will work in our Ottawa office five days a week.ResponsibilitiesIn this role, you will take the lead on small scale-up projects (~200L), driving the transition from laboratory concepts to pilot-scale production in anaerobic digestion and biogas production. You will lead a small operations team, working collaboratively with our laboratory team to optimize processes, troubleshoot, and deliver innovative solutions that pave the way for commercial scale-up.Contributes to the scale-up and design of the world’s first net-zero cellulose-to-biogas plantAnalyzes process configurations, scale-up, process design, and optimization for the various process operating unitsMonitors and anticipates issues. Researches, troubleshoots, and implements solutionsIdentifies opportunities to improve unit operations and increase efficiencyDevelops the design of new or revised equipment, installations, or processes to meet functional requirements or performance specificationsExecutes components of larger design projectsLeads the pilot operations teamKey ResponsibilitiesLead the process development and unit start-up of specific unit operations. This includes hands-on participation in establishing scale-up methodologies and interaction with vendor equipment trialsRegularly report on unit performance. Identify issues; propose and execute solutionsAnalyze different process configurations; mass and energy balances; optimize; participate in the preparation of PFDs and P&IDs, equipment specification, and risk analysisSupervise Operations Specialist and Technology Plant Operator in pilot operationsSupport capital upgrade projects in the demonstration plant, which would include the following activities: process design of plant modifications, equipment or process validationHealth, Safety & Environment ResponsibilitiesEnsure that hazards are identified and addressed and that employees have the processes, procedures, training and tools necessary to be aware of hazards and are equipped to work in compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, corporate procedures, facility health, safety and environmental rules, safe work practices and procedures. This includes (but is not limited to):Ensuring the identification of workplace hazardsEnsuring that hazards are evaluated and, where required, mitigated in a timely mannerEnsuring that workers and supervisors are aware of HSE hazards in their workplaceDemonstrating visibly their own HSE commitments by participating in HSE meetings, planned inspections, incident investigations and HSE auditsPeople Management ResponsibilitiesAs a people manager, this role is responsible for the attraction, development and retention of employees through effective performance management, career development and communication.
