Req ID:27212Vacancy Type: PermanentNumber of Positions:5Closing Date:12/30/2025 Job Summary A Fire Inspector enforces fire and life safety requirements of the City of Mississauga and the Province of Ontario by conducting comprehensive inspections of all classes of buildings and occupancies. They act as an Assistant to the Fire Marshal under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act and as a Building Official under the Building Code Act. In addition, they will participate in fire safety education programs for internal and external clients/customers. Duties and Responsibilities Under the direction of the Division Chief, Inspections and Enforcement of Fire Prevention and Risk Reduction, the Inspector will be responsible to: Conduct fire and life safety inspections, Conduct inspections under the Building Code Act, Conduct inspections under municipal by-laws, Conduct fire investigations as required, Evaluate, approve and ensure implementation of fire safety plans, Perform fire and life safety education duties are required, Review compliance alternatives for approval by the Deputy Chief of Fire Prevention and Risk Reduction, Initiate and participate in prosecutions relating to violations of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Building Code Act, Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code, City of Mississauga By-Laws and other relevant acts, regulations, standards or laws, Provide technical support and training for fire service personnel, Maintain professional certifications and competencies, and Perform other duties as assigned. *Current hours of work involve a 4-day compressed work week (10-hour shifts). Skills and Qualifications Must possess NFPA 1031-1 Fire Inspector Level 1. Post-Secondary graduation from a university, technical or community college in Building Construction, Engineering, Fire Inspection, Fire Safety, Fire Protection or a related field, is considered an asset. Must have an excellent working knowledge of the following: The Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Building Code Act, Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code and relevant NFPA, ULC, CSA, and other applicable codes, standards and regulations, and The technical aspects of fire protection and life safety systems including, but not limited to, fire alarm, voice communication, sprinkler systems, water supply, special fire suppression systems, fire pumps, hose and standpipe, emergency lighting and power, fire fighters' elevators, smoke control measures, the storage, use and handling of dangerous goods, hazardous processes and activities, storage configurations of commodities, as well as building construction and occupancy types. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, internal and external clients. Experience in achieving excellence in customer service and customer experience. Must obtain NFPA Fire Inspector II and NFPA 1035 Fire and Life Safety Educator Level 1 certifications. Must obtain a Building Code Identification Number, successfully pass the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing Ontario Building Code examinations for General Legal/Processes and Fire Protection and be registered with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing within 1 year of starting as a Fire Inspector. Must be willing to take required training courses which may be off site and out of the City. Must be proficient in the use of computer software including Microsoft Office Suite, CAD and the ability to develop proficiency in other corporate solutions. Must have a valid Ontario Driver’s License (min. Class G) with a satisfactory driving record and be willing to use own vehicle (mileage allowance provided) for day-to-day activities. Must provide reliable vehicle for work purposes. Level 3 – Vulnerable Check will be required of the successful candidate, as a condition of employment, at their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.
