The Network Analyst I consults with users to analyze user requirements for information network systems and assess capacity requirements and monitor network performance. This position provides second level technical, operational, and administrative support for all aspects of UBC’s Enterprise Core networkand systems. Responsibilities align with UBC IT’s goals and objectives, supporting the University’s overall mission and customer business needs. On-call after hours support and off-hours scheduled maintenance is required. **Organizational Status** Reporting to the Manager, Network Infrastructure Services, the Network Analyst I is a member of the NMC team providing support for UBCNET and other related Data Network service offerings. This position involves close collaboration with other UBC IT teams, academic and administrative clients, vendors and industry peers to support enterprise network services. **Work Performed** Specific Duties:* Consults with users to determine the required technical support for network systems including monitoring network activity, and troubleshooting and diagnosing network problems.* Monitors facilities capacity requirements, schedules requests for bandwidth and adjusts bandwidth on a daily or weekly basis.* Assesses network performance to ensure that it meets the present and future needs of the enterprise.* Assists in the development of disaster recovery plans and executes network test plans.* Analyses user requirements, prepares equipment specifications, and installs and configures or reconfigures network components.* Implements network security procedures and predetermined software or hardware changes to rectify any security issues.* Contributes to the development of best practices, standards, procedures and quality objectives across systems infrastructure or platforms.* Maintains appropriate professional designations and up-to-date knowledge of current information technology techniques and tools.* Performs other related duties as required.**Consequence of Error/Judgement** This role directly impacts availability, reliability, and security of UBCNET which supports academic, research, and administrative computing. Decisions and actions affect faculties, departments and administrative units across the University. Recommendations and actions regarding network architecture impacts the future direction, stability, security, and sustainment of UBC’s network services. A high level of attention to detail and maintaining broad knowledge of network operations are essential. **Supervision Received** Reports to the Manager, Network Infrastructure Services Works. Receives administrative, broad technical and strategic direction from the Manager, as well as strategic technical direction from the Network Architect. May work independently or collaboratively with other team members, clients, IT staff in leading or supporting roles on projects and operational activities. Work is reviewed based on achievement of objectives. **Supervision Given** No direct supervision given. Coordinates projects and activities as required. **Minimum Qualifications*** Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.* Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.* Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.* Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or other related discipline.* CCNA or other similar advanced technical certification in routing, switching, or network security.* Relevant experience supporting enterprise LAN/WAN, large campus networks, network operations, network security and network management or the equivalent combination of education and experience.* Ability to multitask balancing multiple streams of work, prioritizes workload based on management direction, and works under pressure to resolve challenges and meet project deadlines.* Knowledge and experience working in the following areas:* + Routing and Switching: 802.1D, 802.1Q, 802.1s, 802.1w, 802.1X, 802.3ad, 802.1AX; HSRP, OSPF; IPv4 and IPv6. + Network Security: various firewall technologies, firewall policy management, VPN technologies. + Network monitoring, management, analysis and orchestration systems. + Support Systems: DNS, DHCP, Windows, MAC, UNIX, XML. + Scripting: Python, Perl, or Shell. + Routing and Switching: BGP, BGP/MPLS, policy routing, redistribution, multicast; IPv4 and IPv6. + Network Security: various firewall technologies, AAA, ACLs, device hardening, IDS/IPS, port scanning, vACLs, best practices. + Data Centre: Network Technologies. + Service Provider: MPLS. + Problem resolution of issues through packet capture and analysis and other tools. + Software-defined network. + Cisco certifications is an asset.*Collaboration* - Takes initiative to actively participate in team interactions. Identifies trends and exceptions. Investigates to define problems more accurately. Sorts information in order of importance. Identifies relationships and linkages between components. Identifies variable potential causes and effects. Solicits guidance to define criteria and assign values of importance and urgency. Escalates issues of an exceptional nature. *Information Systems Knowledge* - Possesses a basic understanding of the strategy, structures, processes, and procedures of the enterprise in its relationship with the business and its activities. Troubleshoots in response to requests for technical support. Identifies problems and needs. Escalates problems to appropriate technical experts. *Thoroughness* - Performs tasks according to quality and output standards. Takes initiative to ensure that outcomes meet internal and external customer requirements. Solicits feedback on performance in new tasks. Measures accuracy using performance metrics. Sets improvement standards to reduce errors, omissions, and oversights.
