The Assistant Head Nurse is responsible for overseeing the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of resident care from a unit level. The Assistant Head Nurse, with guidance and support from the Care Manager (or designate) assumes responsibility for staff assignments. Works to ensure patient flow and acts as a resource for skills assessment, staff development, equipment maintenance and other daily operations of the unit. The Assistant Head Nurse has strong clinical skills and is able to provide frontline nursing care, as required, as well as support staff in the delivery of exemplary nursing care. The Assistant Head Nurse refers issues of a financial or human resource nature to the Care Manager (or designate) for their guidance and/or resolution. The Assistant Head Nurse provides feedback for annual performance appraisals by conducting formal and informal skills assessments to determine clinical competence. The Assistant Head Nurse recognizes the value of and works within a family centered care philosophy. Many AHS employees are restricted to work only at a single LTC/DSL site. Description:

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Minimum of two years Charge Nurse experience in the past 5 years. Minimum of two years Registered Nursing experience in the past 5 years. Experience in Assistant Head Nurse Role preferred.
